African champions Super Falcons will camp
in Canada ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which begins in the same
country, in June.
A top official of the Nigeria Football
Federation, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, said the federation was putting plans
in place to ensure that the Falcons advanced to the knockout stages of
the competition for the first time in 16 years.
Speaking in Lagos on Monday during a tour
of the Women’s World Cup trophy, Ikpeme said, “We are conscious as a
federation for the ladies to do well. We do qualify for every of the
World Cup but we only reached the quarter-finals once.
“They are currently playing the AAG and
Olympic qualifiers and we have agreed that before the World Cup starts
in June, the Falcons will embark on a training tour of Canada. We also
have quality friendly matches with countries who have also qualified. It
will give the players a feel of what they should expect in the
competition. We believe that this time around they can go beyond the
group stage.”
The Falcons, who have attended every
Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991, are in a tight
group with two-time champions USA, Sweden and Australia but Ikpeme
believes with the right psychology, the Falcons can advance from their
group.
