Imasuagbon football cup competition helps to identify grassroots talent, says Yak

Alhassan Yakmut, the ‎Director of Grassroots Sports Development, National Sports Commission (NSC), has acknowledged the annual Kenneth Imasuagbon Football Cup Competition as a dependable talent identification programme.

Yakmut said on Thursday in Abuja that the competition, which is for male and female secondary schools in the FCT, is a laudable one.

``I have been attending this tournament in the past six years of its inception and I have found it so dependable for a sustainable approach towards talent identification and development in Nigeria,’’ he said.

The 2014 edition of the competition was held from Feb. 7 to Feb. 20, with matches at five centres spread across the FCT.

The opening and final matches of the competition were however held at the Old Parade Ground.

Yakmut said the competition’s sponsor, Kenneth Imasuagbon, had expressed an extreme passion and dedication towards youth development and empowerment through such a programme.

``Even though he was just recently involved in an accident, that has not deterred him from continuing to sponsor this competition.

``What that tells you is that the man (Imasuagbon) is fully committed to the cause of helping the youths of this country discover their talents, and thus put a smile on their faces,’’ he said.

The Director also urged other philanthropists to emulate Imasuagbon by coming on board to support grassroots sports development in the country, saying ``it is a great way of giving back to the society’’.

Government Secondary School (GSS) Jiwa and GSS Gwagwa on Thursday won the male and female categories of the competition respectively.
