Chikatara inspire Abia Warriors to first league win

Abia Warriors started the 2013/14 Globacom Nigeria Premier League competition in an impressive fashion - with a 2-0 win over Kaduna United at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Going into their first competitive match of the season, Warriors knew victory would put them in a good positive to achieve their objective, staying in the top flight.

And, despite being unfancied by many, they showed their steely resilience at the back and flair going forward.

Goals from Chima Uluocha and Bishop Onyeudo gave the Ladan Bosso managed side a comfortable victory in the week 1 of the Elite League .

At the blast of the centre referee's whistle, 19-year-old Chisom Chikatara entertained fans with series of step-overs and fruitful runs. He was a delight to watch.

Chikatara's brilliant looping volley almost gave the hosts a deserved lead in the early moments.

Warriors were rewarded for the pressure they mounted on United. Goalkeeper Rabin Hussaini illegaly brought down Ifeanyi Onyeali in the 18-yard box, prompting the referee to award the hosts a penalty. Chima Uluocha made no mistake in converting from the spot.

The football itself was scintillating at times. United, were always playing catch-up having been overwhelmed in the opening period. Profligacy spared them a thrashing.

At times the host had been breathtaking, a blur of passing and movement to leave the Ben Doumlong boys gasping.

Ali Adamu's 71st minute miss is a contender the goal of the second, with Emmanuel Fabiyi completely stranded.

Former Enyimba FC and Gombe United striker Bishop Onyeudo, on as a second-half substitute in place of the entertaining Chikatara, secured victory for Warriors when he netted from close range.

The match result was a true reflection of the brilliance shown by a side which paraded stars like Emmanuel Fabiyi, Onyekachi Okoye, Ogbonanya Okemiri, Wasiu Showemimo and Chidozie Johnson
