Former Super Eagles forward set for surgery

Former Super Eagles Captain and two time African Footballer of the year, Nwankwo Kanu has underwent another heart surgery though corrective at the Cleveland Hospital, Ohio, USA.

The surgery became necessary during one of his normal yearly routine medical checks at the hospital following the 1997 heart surgery at the same hospital.

Co-ordinator of the Kanu Heart Foundation, Pastor Onyebuchi Abia confirmed the success of the surgery.
“He’ll be back home in a few days’ time,” Abia said in a statement.

‘’I spoke with him Sunday afternoon and he confirmed he’s in a stable condition.”

Abia said the surgery was the reason why the Atlanta 96 Gold medallist was absent at Nigeria's centennial celebrations where he was giving a national honour.

Nwankwo Kanu started his career locally with defunct Iwayanwu Nationale now known as Heartland later had a distinguished playing career in Europe for teams in Holland, Italy and England winning at least a trophy in all of the team and league he played before retiring from Football at the start of the 2012-2013 season after claiming cash strapped Portsmouth owed him in excess of £3m for unpaid wages ranging from 2006.

Overall,"Papillo" like Kanu his fondly called has won a UEFA Champions League medal, a UEFA Cup medal, three FA Cup Winners Medals and two African Player of the Year awards amongst others.

He is also one of few players to have won the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, UEFA Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal. He made the third-most substitute appearances in Premier League history, appearing from the bench 118 times.

He is also a UNICEF ambassador and founder/president of Kanu Heart Foundation which has been involved in free medical care for children having heart defects
