Uche outshine Yakubu in Champions League match

Kalu Uche scored what turned out to be the match winner as Qatari club Al Rayyan defeated their Iranian opponents Esteghlal 1 - 0 in the Asian Champions League on Tuesday.

In the 14th minute, the experienced attacker capitalized on a goalkeeping mistake, slotting the ball into an empty net after Mehdi Rahmati misjudged Lucho's looping cross.

That was Kalu Uche's second goal in the Asian Champions League this term following his injury time strike against Al Jazira two weeks ago.

Esteghlal did all they can to get the equalizer but were unlucky to hit the woodwork twice.

Another Nigeria international Yakubu Aiyegbeni was on parade for the Qataris but failed to get off the mark for the Lions.

Al Rayyan, who are having a difficult season on the domestic front, were beaten 3 - 2 by Al Jazira in the first group game decided last month.

The victory at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium sees Al Rayyan climb to second position on the Group A standings with 3 points from 2 matches.

But they are behind Al Jazira who maintained their one hundred percent in the competition thanks to the 3 - 1 win over Al Shabab.

Al Rayyan will be guests to Al Shabab in the next round of fixtures on March 18
