Meet The Ivorien Nightmare

Sunday Mba is a Nigerian football player who currently plays as an attacking midfielder for Glo Premier League club Enugu Rangers and the Nigeria national team. He was born in 1988.

Mba started his football tutorials at the famous Pepsi Football Academy in the year 2004. He rose above his peers with his dribbles, work rate, shots, knack for scoring important goals and excellent possession of the ball.

He was invited by the Golden Eaglets coaching crew to the 2005 African Youth Cup. The adventure turned out to be one to forget as the Nigerian team failed to progress past the preliminary stage. He was one of the positive contributors despite Nigeria's exit.

After the painful exit, the playmaker pitched tents with Enyimba Internatioal FC of Aba,where he spent one season before moving to Enugu Rangers at the beginning of the 2007 season in the NPFL. He then returned back to Enyimba for another stint in the 2007/2008 season.

Followers and advocates of the round leather game in Nigeria have been aggrieved by his non inclusion in the national team set-up.

He was part of the winning side that won the 2010 WAFU Cup in Abeokuta. His performance was applauded by the team coach,Daniel De Bull Amokachi. However,he failed to make the cut to the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa. He was tipped to make a lasting impression.

He was one of the prominent NPFL stars that formed Stephen Keshi's squad, when the Big Boss was appointed the Chief Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

He made his official senior debut in Eagles' 0-0 tie against Angola in January 2012. He netted a brace against Liberia in his next game, a match held in Monrovia.

He was part of the 32-man provisional 2013 AFCON squad invited to fight for the available 23 slots made available by CAF for the African Mundial. The energetic attacking midfielder was deemed fit to make the final cut.

He didn't get the chance to showcase his skills in the first round of matches. However, a string of poor shows by Nosahare Igiebor made the coaching crew have a rethink.

He was given a rare start against the dreaded Ivory Coast in the quarter final. It was a moment he grabbed. The playmaker revelled playing behind Emmanuel Emenike, a similar role he is used to in the Domestic League. He announced his arrival to the big stage with a rocket that turned out to be the winning strike in Rustenburg.

On 10th February 2013, he capped a brilliant tournament with a fantastic innovation against the Stallions of Burkina Faso.

Fans of the dubbed him the man christened on Sunday and also delivers the goods on Sundays.

The AFCON 2013 ended with Nigeria emerging as deserving champions, and Mba the revelation of the tournament.

The moment of trial beckoned when Warri Wolves and Enugu Rangers claimed ownership of his clearance. The issue was eventually resolved after a compromise was reached. He kept tongues wagging with a 35-metre rocket when Rangers lost 3-1 to Libolo FC in a CAF Champions League clash played in Angola.

Media reports linked the cool-headed ace with clubs like Bayer Leverkusen, Lyon, Valenciennes, Levante, Marseille, Stade Rennes, Hamburger, Everton and hosts of others.

He was part of the Super Eagles squad that crashed out in the 1st Round of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Recently, he showed why he is dreaded by the Ivoriens with a brace and two assists, when Nigeria massacred Ivory Coast 4-1 in the first leg of the 2014 CHAN qualifying series.
