Akwa Starlets' two-nil win seals their fight against relegation

Akwa Starlets solidified their safety in the Nigerian National League with a comfortable two nil win over visiting Fountain FC at the Water soaked Uyo township stadium.

Nicholas Elijah gave the Uyo side the lead in the 12th minute when he lashed unto Koko Bassey's through pass to slot home a beautiful volley from 15 yards. Saviour Akpan made it two just above the half hour mark from a penalty after in-form striker Ezekiel Solomon was brought down in the area.

Despite the rain-harvest, Akwa Starlet had its best attendance of the season, a development that caught the impression of the team chairman Mr. Ini Edoho. "We are excited to have had this number of fans who came out to support the team irrespective of the persistent rain-drops".

The former Mobil Pegasus, Enyimba and Nitel FC manager said they team has learned lessons from the lapses of the season and will fix the bolts before next season begins. He pointed out the draw against Unicem Rovers and an earlier drawn fixture had robbed the team of promotion.

Reacting to the victory of the NNL side, supporters of the Uyo based club expressed happiness on the outcome of the encounter and also pleaded with the Government and good people of Akwa Ibom State to come to the aid of the team by ensuring the players sign on fees and benefits are paid. A concerned fan, Engr. Bassey Bassey said it was disheartening to be told the players have not been paid their benefits with two matches left to wrap up the season. "How will you expect players to play and win always with empty stomach. The Government should do something about it before it becomes a catastrophe" Engr. Bassey added.
