Speaking on Sunday, minutes after the Dream Team edged Zambia’s U-23 side 2-1 in Lusaka, thanks to a brace by Taiwo Awoniyi, Pinnick said he was proud of the accomplishments of the two teams which has returned Nigeria to the football programme of the All-Africa Games.
“I am very, very excited with the result of the U-23 boys in Zambia. They have done the nation proud, just as the Super Falcons did on Friday. I can tell you that the Nigeria Football Federation and the entire Nigeria football fraternity is happy with the two teams’ accomplishments.”
Nigeria missed the entire football programme of the last All-Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique, as the Dream Team and Falcons failed to qualify. However, the Falcons started the job on Friday by lashing their Malian counterparts 8-0 in Abuja, for a 9-1 aggregate, and on Sunday, Samson Siasia’s wards dug their feet into the ground to do the nation proud.
Taiwo Awoniyi, top scorer at the African Youth Championship in Senegal with the Nigeria U-20 last month, scored in the 34th minute to put Nigeria on top at half time. Zambia equalized in the 76th minute through Friday Samu, but Nigeria made sure of joining Congo-Brazzaville, Sudan and Burkina Faso in the Men’s Football Tournament of the 11th All-Africa Games when Awoniyi scored his second with four minutes to full time.
