Maiden dares Flamingoes

Ghana U17 women team have arrived Nigeria in readiness for the first of two clashes against the U17 women also known as Flamingoes.

A team delegation of 18 players and 7 officials arrived in Abuja on Friday, with futbalgalore.blogspot.com monitoring the training of the visitors at the FIFA Goal Project Centre in the evening.

The two matches will be played this month starting with the first encounter on Sunday at the Abuja National Stadium.

The friendly is coming at the request of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) who reached out to the NFF through their General Secretary, Emmanuel Gyimah in a letter dated 23rd January.

The NFF responded positively to the request by the GFA through another letter the following day, signed by General Secretary, Barrister Musa Amadu.

The first leg of the international friendly is expected to take place at the Abuja National Stadium on Sunday, 2nd February with the return leg to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, 9th February.

Nigeria, Ghana and Zambia have qualified to represent Africa at the 4th FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup taking place in Costa Rica between March 15 – April 4.

The Flamingoes who just returned from a nationwide tour that has seen them play a number of friendly games against top rated clubsides like Nasarawa Amazons, River Angels qualified for the World Cup without kicking a ball, following the withdrawal of South Sudan.

In the tune up matches, Pelican Stars captain Ihezuo Chinwendu showed clash with three goals for the team. She is tipped to do well at the Costa Rica tournament having grabbed headlines with 5 goals scored against Azerbaijan in the 2012 edition of the FIFA showpiece.

Nigeria U17 women have twice crashed out in the quarter finals of the last two editions of the tournament.

The team under the tutelage of Bala Nkiyu and Anne Chijiene will head for Costa Rica on 12th March for the tournament which kicks off on 15th March.

Nigeria play Mexico, China and Colombia in Group D of the tournament, with her first match against the Chinese on March 16, while Ghana will face Korea, Germany and Canada in a tough group at the tournament in Costa Rica.
