Mr Hassan
Wada, the newly elected vice chairman of Kogi State Football Association, has
assured that the Alhaji Umar Isah-led FA board will encourage women participation
in football in the state.
Mr Wada, who
lauded the impressive display of Confluence Queens despite the 3-0 loss to the Super
Falcons at the Fifa Goal Project pitch, Abuja at the weekend, acknowledged a
huge turn around in women football in Kogi.
“Well, like I
said, they (Confluence Queens) were very impressive considering where we were
two seasons ago and where we are today. To play the Super Falcons – senior women
national team in the country. It means that the Confluence Queens have done a
good job,” Mr Wada told journalists.
“Fortunately
as a state, women football has gone far because we have Confluence Queens
playing in the top tier league. So what we need to do to encourage girls within
the state to playing football.
“That way we
know there is a continuation of success at Confluence Queens. As an FA, we will
sensitize the women and get them kicking. And we will see how we can organise
tournament to encourage women participation in football,” said Wada, the son of
Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State.
On his
assessment of the reigning African women champions, Mr Wada believes the final squad
of Coach Edwin Okon will surely do the country proud at the 2015 Fifa Women’s
World Cup billed to hold from June 5 to July 6 in Canada.
“I think
they are still in the process of selecting the best, from my knowledge they still
have a lot of players who are not here – who are outside the country. I think
by the time they pick the best 21 players for Nigeria, they will do well in the
World Cup in Canada,” he concluded.
