Copa del Rey- Ronaldo's brace sends Real through

It was a comfortable Tuesday night for Real Madrid in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal after a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo handed them a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

The 2-0 victory saw them cost into the semifinal of the competition 5-0 on aggregate after crushing the same opponents by three goals last week.

It was a blistering start to the game that saw Real Madrid attacking from the first whistle and earning themselves a penalty as early as they seventh minute after Ronaldo was brought down inside the box by Javi Manquillo.

Ronaldo stepped up and coolly converted his own spot-kick, 1-0 (4-0 on aggregate).

Atletico Madrid had a great chance to level matters in the 13th minute, but Raul Garcia saw his effort from just inside the box smash off the inside of the post and bounce away from danger.

Atletico Madrid’s fortunes went from bad to worse a minute later when they conceded their second penalty of the night after Gareth Bale was brought down inside the box by Emiliano Insua.

Ronaldo again stepped up and sent the ball into the same corner of the net to double his side’s lead, 2-0 (5-0 on aggregate).

Real Madrid took their foot off the gas after that as they cruised through the half unchallenged in defence.

The second 45 saw Real Madrid pick up again and they were unlucky not to find their third of the night in the 74th minute when Ronaldo saw an effort at the back post superbly saved by the keeper.

Two minutes later Atletico should have scored a consolation goal when a corner-kick found Mario Suarez unmarked eight-yards out, but he headed inches wide of the post.

Real Madrid have cruised into the final of Spain’s biggest local cup competition.
