Phil Bardsley scored in the 21st minute and struggling Sunderland neutralised Manchester City's high-powered attack to hang on for a surprising 1-0 victory in the Premier League on Sunday.
Bardsley scored his second goal in five days as the full back beat Costel Pantilimon with a curling shot from a tight angle, and Sunderland soaked up City's pressure the rest of the way to earn just their second victory of the season.
It signaled a possible revival under new manager Gus Poyet, who took over after Paolo Di Canio was sacked with the team in last place. However, it is still second from bottom with seven points from 11 games.
