Italy gaffer happy to reach half century of games

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli says he will be proud to lead the Azzurri for the 50th time this evening when they face Nigeria.

Prandelli will celebrate his half century less than four years after replacing Marcello Lippi in the summer of 2010.

“It will be an honour to reach such a landmark against Nigeria,” he told RAI Sport on Monday.

“I want to thank all of those who have worked by my side over these last few years.

“Another 50 games in charge? It is premature to talk about that possibility right now. Let’s just celebrate with a good display.”

Prandelli’s contract is set to expire after the 2014 World Cup and he’s expected to return to club football for 2014-15.

Italy will again line-up with a 4-3-1-2 even if the Azzurri do lack a traditional No 10 at this moment in time.

“Antonio Cassano did well at the European Championship, but we then opted to go down a different path,” the CT added.

“Giuseppe Rossi? He has a few of the characteristics of Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Baggio.”

There is talk that Prandelli could recall Francesco Totti, 37, for next summer’s tournament in Brazil.

“He is a talent, but time stops for nobody. Also, the last time we talked about Totti it brought bad luck as he then got injured…”
