Reading new striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has warned that he is still a dangerous player to rivals, saying his goal at Derby on Saturday was just the beginning.
The 32-year-old came off the bench to score with a wonderful finish at Derby, and he has already made himself a hero after just 38 minutes in a Reading shirt.
It was a top class introduction from the Nigerian frontman, who has a sensational goal-scoring record in his career – and he’s aiming to keep hitting the back of the net for the Royals.
He said on the club’s website, “I want to keep doing my best, score some more goals and continue to help the team.
“It’s good to score and it was a great win. Now I hope I score more. As a striker, it gives you more confidence to play and when you are scoring that is perfect.
“It gives you confidence when you come to a new club. I’ve been working so hard for the last two weeks and I had the opportunity to come on today and managed to score the winner. I’m really pleased.
“It’s great to have the fans singing for me and hopefully if they continue then it will help give me the confidence to score more goals.”
Although The Yak obviously took the headlines across the country, the amiable frontman was keen to pay homage to a real team effort. “You have to give credit to all of the players.
“We worked and fought as a team and we deserved to win, they had a couple of chances, Adam Federici was good but we deserved it.
“And it is not easy against ten men. Even in training when we play against 10 it can be hard because they can fight more than 11.
“You have to give Derby credit because they played very well and they had a couple of chances. We stuck together and we got the result that we wanted.
“The FA Cup is drama. No team is too small and if you don’t play well then you are going to lose. We are just happy to get into the next round and we want to progress again. It would be nice to play at Wembley but there is a long way to go yet.”
The former Blackburn man is delighted to be back in the English game after time in Qatar and China, saying “The passion is there. When you look at English atmospheres they are unbelievable. Our fans were brilliant and this is the place to pay football. They give us more motivation to play and I am very happy to be here.
“The fans came a long way and for them to sing my name was good. You just want give everything on the pitch and to please them. They deserve to be happy when they go home. I’m happy they’ll go home because it’s a long way but I’m sure they’ll be very happy.”
The frontman is of course now targetting more time on the pitch and said, “As a striker when you have another striker that is scoring goals it makes you want to do well in training. I want to give it my best and fight for a position. It’s not going to be easy. I’m just enjoying every moment that the manager wants me to play.”
