Chrisantus Macauley scored a scintillating hat-trick as Las Palmas continued their chase for a promotion slot to the LIGA BBVA with a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Sporting Gijon at the Estadio Municipal El Molenon.
This was a majestic individual display by the Nigerian striker, who left the field to a rapturous ovation and went down the tunnel with the match-ball under his arm.
Chrisantus fired Las Palmas in front on 8 minutes, after a delightful, jinking run that tore the Sporting Gijon defence to shreds.
The 2007 AYC and FIFA U17 World Cup topscorer added a second fourteen minutes later, heading powerfully beyond goalkeeper Pichu Cuellar, and completed his hat-trick with a glancing header from a Vicente Gomez free-kick.
Las Palmas have leaped to 6th on the table, with 17 points from 11 league matches.
