HJK Helsinki have secured their fifth Finnish First Division title in a row, their 26th in all.
HJK retained their crown with two games remaining thanks to a 3-0 victory against Finnish Cup winners RoPS Rovaniemi on Sunday. It marks a first title with the club for Sixten Boström, who replaced Antti Muurinen at the helm at the end of last season. It has not been all plain sailing, however, with FC Honka Espoo battling hard to stay in touch for much of the campaign. There was also European disappointment in the shape of a UEFA Champions League second qualifying round defeat by Estonian side JK Nõmme Kalju.
Boström admits those were the toughest times of the season for his side. "It was those two to three days after the defeat in Tallinn," he said. "We were all very down then, but we have managed to rise again." Indeed HJK are undefeated in the league since the middle of June and rubber-stamped the championship with a string of fine results in September. "I am pleased now and I hope [the fans] are pleased as well," added Boström. "They wanted us to win the championship before the season started and now they have got it."
