Coach Stanley Eguma has blamed lack of match fitness and poor
marksmanship for the Dolphins two-nil defeat to Kano Pillars in the
opening match of the 2015 Super Six.
While admitting that his former forward, Emem Eduok would have made an impact in the match if he was available, he promised that Dolphins will produce another quality player of same if not higher stature.
“Yes, I missed Emem Eduok today (Saturday) but Dolphins is known to produce star players like Ajagun, Aaron in the Super Eagles and now Eduok. We will produce another Eduok.”
Eguma would prefer not to dwell on some other administrative challenges the team has been facing but said he was proud of the recovery spirit of the players which showed in their not conceding further goals after the early goals scored by Samuel Tswanya and Christian Obiozor in the first ten minutes of play.
Speaking at the post-match conference, Eguma admitted the defeat was painful but saluted the courage of the players to keep the goals tally at two after conceding early.
“There is no way coach will lose a match and be satisfied but I can only attribute it to late preparations...we have only trained for four days and arrived here yesterday evening (Friday evening). I salute the courage of the players who after initial loss of concentration recovered to hold and I know we will improve as the game goes on”.
He is optimistic the team would improve as the games progress and said he is using the tournament to assess the players and fine-tune their match plans for the Confederation Cup outing in February.
“My expectation from the tournament is that we will improve all-round, correct the defensive errors, be more coordinated in the middle and we will get it right. This tournament is very important for the team as without it we would not have seen the weaknesses such as the bad passes which though improved in the course of the game”.
Eguma praised Kano Pillars for their win and described them as “the better side today (Saturday), they also were fitter and had the luck of early goals.”
