The Golden Eaglets defeated Sokoto United 2-0 in a friendly game played
at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in preparation for next month's African
Youth Championship.
Sokoto United were hurriedly drafted into take on the Golden
Eaglets, after South Africa pulled out of an arranged friendly citing
reasons beyond their control.
The first half was dull, drab and uninteresting with few chances as both
teams kept the ball in the midfield to go into the break deadlock at
0-0.
However, Emmanuel Amuneke's side got the curtain raiser in the 70th minute through substitute Abdullahi Suleiman.
Seven minutes later the Eaglets doubled their advantage through Victor Osimhen to kill off any challenge from Sokoto United.
Speaking after the game, Amuneke said the performance of his boys
against a team in the second division of Nigeria league proved their
readiness for the March showpiece in Niger Republic.
Nigeria will battle host Niger, Guinea and Zambia in group A for a
place in the next round of the championship, which guarantees
qualification for the World Cup.
The tournament will start on the 15th of February with the final schedule for March 1st.
