After a hard fought 1-0 away win over Gateway Football Club in Abeokuta on Sunday in the opening game of the Nigeria National League, players and officials of The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries Football club of Lagos have dedicated the victory to the sponsor and General Overseer of the church, Dr Daniel Olukoya.
Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu was full of praise for the man they fondly call G. 0.
"The
only way we can show our appreciation to our G 0 is by picking a ticket
to the Nigeria Premier League at the end of this season. We missed
promotion in a funny way last season but this is our year.
"There's
nothing we've asked from Dr Olukoya that he has not given us, he pays
our salaries regularly, accommodates us in a very good hostel and also
feeds us daily, we owe him a lot, he has been a wonderful father to all
of us. May God bless him".
It will be recalled that MFM FC
missed out on a ticket to the NPL last season after losing her last
three games to First Bank of Lagos, Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Gabros
FC of Nnewi in dramatic factions.
But playing without three of
her regular players, defender Monsuru Bashiru, goalkeeper Joshua
Enaholo and midfielder Ifeanyi Ifeanyi who are in the Flying Eagles
training camp in Germany, The Olukoya Boys began another journey
towards joining the elite division on sunday in Abeokuta against Gateway FC at the MKO Abiola Stadium.
With
the first half even, the defending champions of the Church League in
Nigeria, needed just 4 minutes into the second stanza to shoot into the
lead. A well taken freekick by captain Nelson Kenedinum from Gateway's
half of the field found striker, Adekunle Adegboyega who battled for
possesion with a sea of legs in the home teams vital, a lose ball found a lurking MFM FC defender, Julius Emiloju who tucked in the ball to give the visitors the lead.
Meanwhile,
MFM FC who emerged champions of the maiden edition of The Church World
Cup in India in December, 2014 have put Sundays victory in Abeokuta
behind them as they are back in Lagos to prepare for this weekend's game
against First Bank Football club in a local derby billed for the Agege
Stadium.
Diminutive midfielder, Emmanuel Onuwa told the media in a chat that it was fight to finish with First Bank FC on Saturday.
"We've
put the game against Gateway behind us, our focus is on First Bank,
we've scores to settle and they know it. Our target is to gain promotion
and nothing will stop us this season".
