Teslim Thunder Balogun Football Club of
Ikorodu on Sunday defeated Leo club, also of Ikorodu 8-1in the opening
match of the 3rd edition of Tesilim Balogun Memorial Cup. The
competition is holding as an under-17 event.
This year tournament kicked off at Strong
Tower Academy Play Ground in Ikorodu with 32 teams participating. Other
venues to be used are the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere and Campus
Square, Lagos. The competition billed to end in August.
In a speech delivered on behalf of the
late Teslim Akanni Balogun family, Mr. Rasheed Balogun stated that this
competition has been set apart to celebrate their father and mentor and
to also remember their late mother Alhaja Mulikat Tesilim who was
instrumental to her husband’s glories in the round leather game. He
noted the role of sports, especially football, in our modern and
changing society.
He said, “Sports is a unifying factor and
it can be viewed as a common tool for human development and it can be
likened to foundation for achieving skills.”
The first edition of the competition had
24 teams, while second featured 29. The 2015 tourney had over 40 teams
on ground but only 32 of them were approved after the screening process.
