Garba Shifts Focus To Defensive Issues Ahead Of World Cup

Ahead of the upcoming World Youth Championship, Manu Garba has noticed that the Flying Eagles’ defence is the one grey area that still needs work.

The one aspect of the team that appears to be settled is that of the midfield where the trio of Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Kingsley Sokari and Ifeanyi Matthew are guaranteed to form a three-man  midfield. While in attack, despite the unavailability of Moses Simon, Isacc Success and Kelechi Iheanacho, they appear to be doing well going by results of their friendly games.

During the Africa Youth Championship the one area of the team most noticed as a possible weakness was the defence, especially the central areas. Many thought Wilfred Ndidi’s inclusion for the World cup would stabilise it but that appears not to be the case as they have conceded in two friendly games from very few shots on target by their opponents and the coaches are not happy over the trend.

SL10.ng gathered from team sources that Manu Garba is not entirely satisfy with the marking ability of his preferred central defence duo of Wilfred Ndidi and Zaharadeen Bello and the team as a whole needs to defend better and cover up for the full backs when they overlap.

Manu is, however, confident that the defensive issues noticed will be sorted out before their first game against Brazil and presently they are working on a system that will see the defensive midfielder play as the third man in defence when they are under pressure.
