Barcelona gaffer and star player in line for new deals

Josep Maria Bartomeu, has refused to put a timescale on the possible contract renewals of his superstar, Lionel Messi, and head coach, Gerardo Martino.

Bartomeu confirmed right now all focus is on the pitch, but talks about new contracts with Messi and Martino will be held when the time is right.

However, he again highlighted his desire to not only renew Messi’s contract, but to make him the world’s best-paid player.

“We’re at a decisive stage of the championship now and that’s where we have to focus,” he said.

“Leo is eager to play and make a difference. As for the renewal, we will talk about it when the time comes.

“But I insist that Messi is the best player in the world and should be paid like the best player in the world.”

The contract of Barcelona coach, Gerardo Martino, who only joined the Catalan giants in the summer, runs out in 2015, but Bartomeu says the club is satisfied with the coach’s contribution and will soon enter contract talks.

“[Martino] is doing a great job and has a contract until 2015,” Bartomeu continued.

“If everything continues as it is so far, it’s obvious that we’re happy and we’ll talk.

The Barcelona president also confirmed that the club has made contact with Johan Cruyff in order to improve the broken relationship with their club legend.

“We have contacted people close to Cruyff and we continue talking,” Bartomeu added.

“He is a prominent figure and hopefully things will return to normal.”

It was Bartomeu’s predecessor, Sandro Rosell, that fell out with Cruyff and removed the Dutchman’s title of honorary president.
