African Nations Championship debutants Nigeria earned a victory over
hosts, South Africa after a brace from Ejike Uzoenyi and Ifeanyi Ede’s
penalty kick sealed the points.
Ejike Uzoenyi’s 18-yard wonder goal was the highlight of Nigeria’s win over South Africa on Sunday.
The former Stade Rennes star rifled home from inside the box to set the tone for a comfortable victory in the 22nd minute of action.
Ifeanyi Edeh doubled the lead after the menacing Gbolahan Salami was brought down just inside the area.
Ejike hit the woodwork when his shot looped in off the bar. He made it 3 - 0 after 64 minutes.
Bernard Parker’s well taken 81st minute penalty and a red card to Solomon Kwambe set up a tense finish but Super Eagles hung on, after Mere was also sent off by the match referee.
The West Africans side dominated much of the first half as Ede came close to a brace when he tried to beat the keeper.
Mashego went close for Bafana Bafana, but the much improved Chigozie Agbim twice made acrobatic saves.
In the other group match, the Eagles of Mali fought back to defeat Mambas of Mozambique two goals to one, thus finishing as group winners with seven points, while Nigeria ended up with six points.
