New York Red Bulls picked up their first win of the MLS season with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.

The Red Bulls went into the game on the back of two defeats and two draws but they picked up maximum points for the first time courtesy of goals from Dax McCarthy and Thierry Henry.

McCarthy opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second half before Conor Casey restored parity for the visitors just eight minutes later.

Substitute Henry, who went wide with a spectacular bicycle kick in the 76th minute, re-asserted his side's dominance in the 81st minute, controlling a short cross from Peguy Luyindula and finishing his first goal of the season.

Leaders Montreal Impact dropped points for the first time in a 2-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City.

Sporting made a bright start to the game as Claudio Bieler tucked his low shot inside the far post on eight minutes.

The match was put beyond doubt 10 minutes from time when Graham Zusi dinked his effort over Troy Perkins.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Houston Dynamo accounted for the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 to extend their unbeaten run at home to 30 games.

Chivas USA defeated Vancouver Whitecaps for the first time in their short league history, winning 2-1 in California.

The visitors got off to a shocking start when Japanese midfielder Jun Davidson put through his own goal after 12 minutes.

Eric Avila made it 2-0 in the 55th minute before striker Kenny Miller pulled a goal back for the Whitecaps after 64 minutes.
