WCQ- Ghana prepares for the battle of Zambia

The Black Stars, Ghana’s senior national football team, held their first training session on Monday in Accra ahead of Friday’s final 2014 World Cup Group D qualifying clash against Zambia in Kumasi, central Ghana.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) said 13 players turned up for the training.

Captain Asamoah Gyan, Albert Adomah, Rashid Sumaila, Mahatma Otoo, Kwadwo Asamoah, Jonathan Mensah, Razak Braimah, Fatau Dauda, Rabiu Mohammed, Christian Atsu, Mubarak Wakaso and Awal Mohammed were present on the first day.

Also present was midfielder Michael Essien, who lost his father at the weekend.

Coach Kwesi Appiah expects more player arrivals for Tuesday's training session.

The Black Stars are on top of Group D, one point better than Zambia, and are looking to confirm their place in the third round stage.

Winners of this second round of qualifiers will advance to the final round where 10 sides will be paired for the final stage during October and November with the winners of the five home-and-away ties qualifying for Brazil 2014.

Meanwhile, the GFA has sent a message of condolence to Essien, saying it is saddened to hear of of the death of his father, James Essien.

“James, who played for Accra Hearts of Oak, had a particular passion for Ghana football and his death is a loss to Ghana football,” the GFA said, adding “To Michael, your strength in these trying times is inspiring.”
