Former Senegal defender Omar Daf has been named interim coach of French Ligue 1 side Sochaux.
The 36-year old will lead a three-man coaching team that includes Eric Pegorer, goalkeepers’ coach and Bernard Gines, fitness trainer following the resignation of Frenchman Eric Hely last Wednesday.
Hely tendered his resignation after a 5-1 drubbing by Guingamp in mid-week that sent Sochaux to the depth of the league log. On the choice of Daf, President of Sochaux, Laurent Pernet said “it was a natural choice because he knows the club and has the qualifications for this specific task.
“He is very close to the players and has been with them in recent months. He has a great knowledge of the club and its values.” His first task will be the week eight clash against Valenciennes on Saturday at the Auguste-Bonal Stadium.
Daf spent 13-seasons with Sochaux in two spells (1997-2009 and 2012-2013) before hanging up his boots last May. The Senegalese becomes the latest African to have a stint with top European club after Ghanaian Otto Addo was named by German club, Hamburg in a similar capacity a fortnight ago.
A right-back during his playing days, Daf laced his boots for the Teranga Lions between 1998 and 2012, appearing in five Africa Cup of Nations (2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2012), as well as the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and Korea.
