Norwegian Toppserien side Avaldsnes Idrettslag have appointed retired Nigeria international Maureen Mmadu as their assistant coach with immediate effect despite having no coaching experience.
The 36 - year - old has signed a one - year renewable contract with Avaldsnes, who are managed by Arne Møller.
She will also assist Geir Egil in the second team that campaigns for honours in the second division.
“I don’t have any coaching license for now but I was given the job based on my experience and what I have achieved here in Norway. I studied Physical and Health Education.
“I captained this team for two straight years - 2011 and 2012 - and helped them come to the top league.
“Last year I helped the second team gain promotion from the third to second division as assistant coach/player so they appreciate what I am doing.
“The first team got to the final of the 2013 Norwegian Cup losing to Stabæk.
“My target for this coming season is for Avaldsnes to finish in the top three,” an excited Maureen Mmadu said.
Maureen Mmadu had a successful career as a player, an international footballer of repute for that matter, having represented Nigeria at four World Cups, two Olympics and six African Women Championship.
She defended the colors of Ado Babes of Onitsha, Pelican Queens of Calabar and Jegede Babes, Lagos before leaving for Scandinavia.
