Dimeji Lawal: Nigeria U20 Are AYC Favourites

Former Flying Eagles star, Dimeji Lawal has backed the current Nigerian Under-20 side to win the African Youth Championship (AYC) which begins tomorrow in Senegal.

Dimeji is confident in the fact that most of the players have stayed together for so long with the same coaches and despite missing key players like Kelechi Iheanacho and Isaac Success, he believes the team is still strong enough to win the trophy.

“The target for the Flying Eagles will be a semi-final slot but the team Manu Garba, Nduka Ugbade and colleagues have prepared can actually bring the Cup back to Nigeria,” he explained to Brilafm.

“I have seen these wonderful boys and you know in football, continuity is very important and this is the key to success.

“I remember in Suadi 89’ we moved from the Golden Eaglets to Flying Eagles and I think we are repeating the same thing now.The boys are used to the coaches because core of the team are members that won the last Under-17 World Cup, so I think that they will surely do well.”

Dimeji Lawal was part of the Nigerian team that won silver at the Saudi 89 U-20 World Cup and were famous for the remarkable feat they pulled against USSR in the knockout phase when they recovered from a 4-0 deficit to win the game on penalties – The ‘Damman-miracle’.
