Some reviews from match day 1 of the EPL

Liverpool 1-0 Stoke City

New Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet received three bonus points (BP) after saving Jonathan Walters’ spot-kick with minutes remaining and making five saves and seven recoveries throughout the match.

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson and summer signing Iago Aspas picked up two BP apiece. Spanish forward Aspas claimed an assist for Daniel Sturridge’s goal and made a further four key passes, while Glen Johnson made five recoveries and two clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI).

Arsenal 1-3 Aston Villa

Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke earned the maximum three bonus points as he scored twice in their opening day win at the Emirates. Benteke scored his first from a rebound after his first spot-kick was saved, scored a second half penalty as well as making three key passes.

Despite suffering defeat, Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud claimed two BP. The Frenchman scored the hosts’ only goal, created two big chances and made a couple of key passes. Wojciech Szczesny, who saved a Benteke penalty and made three further saves, and Villa defender Ciaran Clark, who made 13 CBI, each picked up a single BP.

Norwich City 2-2 Everton

Everton goalscorers Seamus Coleman and Ross Barkley both picked up three bonus points in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Norwich at Carrow Road. Barkley, 19, scored with a long range strike, had an overall pass completion rate of 96% and made nine recoveries in central midfield. Defender Coleman assisted Barkley’s goal and made six CBI.

Norwich defender Steven Whittaker scored and claimed an assist to accrue one BP. He also made three tackles and three CBI during the match.

Sunderland 0-1 Fulham

Fulham captain Brede Hangeland gained maximum bonus points with a commanding defensive display at the Stadium of Light. The visitors earned a clean sheet with the skipper making a total of 16 CBI throughout the match.

Pajtim Kasami’s first ever Barclays Premier League goal was the winner and he also made a key pass in Fulham’s attacking play, while defender Aaron Hughes made 12 CBI as they kept a clean sheet. Both players earned two BP.

West Bromwich Albion 0-1 Southampton

Southampton debutant Dejan Lovren and 18-year-old full back Luke Shaw both picked up three bonus points as the visitors earned a 1-0 victory at the Hawthorns. Shaw gained an assist after being fouled inside the West Brom penalty area, with Rickie Lambert converting the resulting spot-kick. The defender also made six CBI and a cross from open play as the Saints defence kept a clean sheet.

New signing Lovren made three tackles and eight CBI, while Lambert emphatically scored a 90th minute penalty and completed another key pass to earn one BP.

West Ham United 2-0 Cardiff City

Goalscorers Joe Cole and Kevin Nolan both claimed maximum bonus points as West Ham got off to a winning start against Cardiff. As well as his goal, Nolan contributed eight CBI and four recoveries in midfield, while Cole scored the winning goal, made a cross from open play and made four recoveries.

Defensive duo Winston Reid and Joey O’Brien picked up one BP each as the Hammers gained a clean sheet. O’Brien made a key pass, seven CBI and two tackles, while Reid made 14 CBI and two recoveries at the back.

Swansea City 1-4 Manchester United

Danny Welbeck earned the highest bonus points system score in Gameweek 1 after scoring two goals in Manchester United’s emphatic win at the Liberty Stadium. As well as bagging a brace, Welbeck made five CBI defensively and completed 84% of his passes.

Robin van Persie also scored twice in Man Utd’s win. His 88% pass completion rate and one cross from open play earned him two BP. Wayne Rooney gained a single BP after making an instant impact off the bench, providing two assists in just 28 minutes.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Spanish forward Roberto Soldado scored the only goal as Spurs got off to a winning start, and the summer signing picked up maximum BP in the process. Soldado made four key passes and three recoveries in a fine display.

Central defensive pairing Jan Vertonghen and Michael Dawson both earned two BP as the visitors kept a clean sheet at Selhurst Park. Vertonghen completed 97% of his passes and made 12 CBI, while Dawson made ten CBI and three recoveries.

Chelsea 2-0 Hull City

Brazilian playmaker Oscar capped off a fine performance with Chelsea’s opening goal as he earned three bonus points. The midfielder scored, completed 81% of his passes and made three key passes as they created numerous opportunities during the match.

Defensive trio Ashley Cole, John Terry and Gary Cahill all earned two BP as the Blues kept a clean sheet. Cole had a 91% pass completion rate and made seven recoveries defensively, Terry made seven CBI and completed 95% of his passes while Cahill made eight CBI and seven recoveries.

Manchester City 4-0 Newcastle United

Man City's Sergio Aguero earned maximum bonus points at the Etihad Stadium. The Argentine's excellent finish put City 2-0 up and he claimed an assist after being fouled on the edge of the area after the break, with Yaya Toure converting the resulting free-kick. He also produced two key passes.

Toure gained two BP with his goal and eight recoveries in an impressive display. Defenders Pablo Zabaleta, who set up City's fourth goal and made six CBI, and Joleon Lescott, who made eight CBI and 11 recoveries, gained one BP each as City kept a clean sheet. David Silva also earned one BP after scoring and completing 91% of his passes.
