Aston Villa stunned Arsenal, sending Arsene Wenger’s side to their first opening-day defeat at home in 20 years of the Barclays Premier League with a 3-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal took the lead through Olivier Giroud’s neat flick on six minutes but were pegged back by Christian Benteke. Wojciech Szczesny, the Arsenal goalkeeper, ended Gabriel Agbonlahor’s fine run with a foul in the area. The Pole saved Benteke’s penalty but could only parry into the air, allowing the Villa forward to nod in.
Things got worse for Arsenal when they conceded a second penalty, Laurent Koscielny bringing down Agbonlahor 15 minutes into the second half. Benteke this time converted at the first attempt. Arsenal’s task got harder when Koscielny was sent off for a second booking. Antonio Luna secured the three points with a breakaway goal five minutes from the end.
