The Gunners are known to be making moves in the market to bolster their squad and a number of outlets suggest that a primary focus is now Los Blancos’ French international striker.
The Daily Mail, Telegraph and BBC are among those running the line that Arsene Wenger’s side are preparing a £40m, €47m bid for the 25-year-old, believing that this would tempt Madrid into negotiations.
It is understood that the Premier League side have been in initial contact in the past 48 hours and been encouraged by the response they have had.
Reports just yesterday suggested that the player and his current employers would open talks on a contract renewal in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, it is also suggested that Arsenal are looking at a separate bid for Di Maria, who earlier this week was paired with possible from Paris Saint-Germain.
It is seen in England that Madrid may contemplate sales of players in the final days of the transfer window to help fund a world record move for Tottenham’s Gareth Bale.
Earlier this summer saw Arsenal tracking Gonzalo Higuain, before Madrid agreed the Argentine’s sale to Napoli.
