The 29th edition of the Mock Africa Cup
of Nations football championship has kicked off in Lagos. A total of 20
teams, including 2013 champions Ethiopia, are participating and have
been divided into six groups.
Other top teams include Nigeria, Congo, Ghana, Cameroon, Egypt, Tunisia, Kenya, Mali and Zambia.
The matches will be played at the Nigerian Navy playground, Apapa, Ajegunle.
The founder and secretary general of the
grassroots championship, Lawrence Alabrah, promised that this year’s
edition would be better and bigger than previous editions in terms of
organisation and the standard of play.
“You know that this championship is
renowned for producing top class players for this country in the past.
The likes of Henry Nwosu, Dipreiye Teibowei, Jumbo Awala, Emmanuel
Amuneke, Gabriel Okolosi, Benjamin James, Mathias Enebeli, Paul Imomoh
and several others featured in this tournament,” Alabrah said.
He went to debunk claims that the
championship had been suspended. According to him, the championship only
witnessed some financial difficulties as funds stopped coming from the
Lagos State Government, which had been supporting it.
He expressed his gratitude to the state government for the support the championship had enjoyed in the past.
The matches, which started on December 6, are expected to end on January 4, 2015.
