Martins Misses Out On MLS Award

Nigerians will be left disappointed as LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane has been named Major League Soccer's Most Valuable Player for the 2014 season, the league announced Wednesday.


The former Tottenham striker beat out Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins and New England Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen to win the award. The Galaxy forward finished with 30.95 percent of club votes, 32.22 percent of media votes and 25.52 percent of player votes, giving him a weighted total of 88.69. Martins finished second with a weighted total of 63.22.

In 29 appearances (28 starts) this season, Keane scored 19 goals and recorded 14 assists, helping the Galaxy finish second in the Western Conference. The Galaxy advanced to the 2014 MLS Cup on Sunday after defeating Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference Final on away goals.

Keane, who joined LA Galaxy in 2011, becomes the first player from the club to win league MVP since Landon Donovan in 2009. The 34-year-old forward was named to the 2014 MLS Best XI earlier this week
