The Argentina striker suffered a knee ligament injury against Everton two weeks ago and it was initially thought that he would be out until February.
Pellegrini is optimistic that Aguero will be back sooner, possibly against Everton on January 10 or against Arsenal the following week.
“Sergio has a torn ligament and I think he will play long before the Champions League tie against Barcelona, probably in the first weeks of January,” said the City boss, who was speaking at an awards ceremony in Madrid.
