THE DUTCH MASTER GIVES UNITED THE COMMUNITY SHIELD

A brace of goals from Robin van Persie steered Barclays Premier League champions Manchester United to a 2-0 victory over FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic in the FA Community Shield.

The striker scored in each half, the first a superb header, to give David Moyes his first silverware as the United manager, after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer.

“There's a relief that you win anything,” he said. “You always want to do that … but this is Sir Alex's trophy really, it's for him the team has won this today.

“I was in charge of the team today but it's a reward for winning the Premier League under Sir Alex last season and I won't take too much credit for it. The ones in the future are going to have to come from me!”

Of Van Persie, Moyes had nothing but praise for the striker who was the leading scorer in the Barclays Premier League last season.

"It was a great header, a brilliantly guided header," Moyes said. "He's [Van Persie] been very easy to work with, very receptive and helpful."
