In the early kick-off, Liverpool picked up their first opening-day win since 2008, beating Stoke City 1-0 at Anfield. Daniel Sturridge got the only goal in the first half but Liverpool were grateful to goalkeeper Simon Mignolet who saved Jonathan Walters’ 85th-minute penalty.
