Seven Girls the recipients of Akide’s Play2Learn scholarships

After two days of intensive training and evaluation, five girls were selected for soccer scholarships in the USA under Mercy Akide-Udoh’s Play2Learn initiative.

The five will be joined by two other girls, Katherine Kenneth and Edore Egbude, who were both spotted at the Airtel Rising Stars National Finals in Lagos.

Nineteen year old Rita Orjiako, 17 year-old Ogundeko Deborah Oluwatosin, 17 year-old Asunmonu Ajoke, 19 year-old Kehinde Busari and 22 year-old Uzor Tochi Success all excelled during the two-day trials.

“These girls showed not only great talent but also a passion for the game, and some of the stories they told of their background broke my heart,” said the former Super Falcons striker.

“These are the kind of girls we are looking for. Those who do not come from rich backgrounds, but who have talent to play football, and the right secondary school results to take them to college so they can help their families in the future.”

According to Akide-Udoh, preparations to get the the girls out will start immediately, beginning with having them registered for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exams.

“The real work starts here,” said Akide-Udoh. “This is where we need sponsorship to get these girls off to the schools, and we hope we can get that support.

“We are grateful to the Commissioner of Sports in Lagos State, and the Lagos State Football Association chairman for their support so far.”

“I still feel like I am dreaming,” said Rita Orjiako, one of the successful girls. “This is a great opportunity for me and I will do my best to make Mercy proud.”

Play2Learn is a program that seeks to identify, train and recommend talented girls between the ages of 16 and 22 for soccer scholarships to colleges in the United States

AC Milan agree deal with Real Madrid for Kaka

Kaka looks set for a return to AC Milan after the Italian club reached a deal with Real Madrid for the Brazilian.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri confirmed Sunday that a deal has been agreeed between the clubs but adds that "it seems there's only the agreement with the player left to sort."

A move to bring Milan idol Kaka back before the start of last season fell through, as did attempts in January. Kaka joined Madrid from Milan in 2009 for 65 million euros ($92 million). But after injuring his left knee, Kaka was never able to establish himself as a first-choice player.

The 31-year-old hasn't played in an official match since the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti, who coached him during his best seasons at Milan when he was named FIFA world player of the year in 2007.

David Mooney, who had a loan spell at the U's in 2010-11, fired the visitors ahead from close range, after great work from Moses Odubajo, who spotted jersey number 11. The Nigerian was on for the entire duration.

Colchester levelled against the run of play when Jabo Ibehre fired past Jamie Jones from just inside the area.

But Lisbie then headed the O's back in front and they held on to claim their fifth consecutive win this term.

The victory was also Orient's first at Colchester since 1951.

Ikeme's Wolves moves to 2nd spot in the English League 1

Second-half goals by Leigh Griffiths, Bjorn Sigurdarson and Kevin McDonald guided high-flying Wolverhampton Wandererers to a comfortable victory at Port Vale.

Wolves opened the scoring with Griffiths driving a fierce shot inside Chris Neal's left-hand post.
