Robo Handed Baptism Of Fire By Bayelsa Queens

Three-time Champions of the Nigeria Women Premier League, Bayelsa Queens have begun the 2014/15 Nigeria Women Premier League season on high after a slim 2-1 away victory over newly promoted FC Robo at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos.

Two first half goals from Rafiat Sule and Skipper, Joy Bokiri were enough to seal the win for the visitors as Robo could only pull one back through Okeke Chidinma.

The Queens from Bayelsa who had dispatched reigning League and Federation Cup Champions Rivers Angels with an identical score line in a test game on Wednesday, announced their dominance from the get go and not long after, sensational Sule netted the first goal of the season in the 6th minute.

It was a continuation from where she stopped in midweek as she was the one who slotted home the winner for Bayelsa Queens against Rivers Angels.

Four minutes later, Rashidat Ajibade unleashed a long range shot but Favour Nwaohia could not be troubled as she punched to safety.

Meanwhile from corner kicks to Free kicks, Robo had more to their advantage but none could materialise into an equalizer. Free kick taker, Adebisi Amirat even had to replay one on the 28th minute after an infringement was spotted while she took the first shot, but though well taken, Nwaohia would not let it in.

While Robo still played second fiddle to an obviously more experienced Bayelsa side, Flamingoes starlet, Bokiri took the game another goal farther from the home team's reach in the 31st minute.

Rampaging Rafiat had got past two defenders and pulled the trigger, but Amole Damilola spilled the ball to the path of Bokiri who sent the ball into the waiting net and the visitors took that comfortable lead into half time.

FC Robo stepped up the plate in the second period, matching their opponents toe-to-toe and then came their chance to get back in the game as Okeke Chidinma was hacked down in the 18yard box, but the resulting penalty kick taken by Ndubuisi Esther was shot to the sky.

The goal eventually came on 67 minutes with Adebisi Amirat's free kick finally bearing fruit as Okeke Chidinma rose up and flicked the ball in with a great header.

With a come-back on the mind of Emmanuel Osahon's girls, it was end to end action in the remaining minutes of the match, Chidinma dribbled her way through Bayelsa Queen's defence but her final touch was an easy catch for Favour.

An injury scare surfaced for Bayelsa Queens as a collision sends their goal tender to the ground. However after the medics attended to her, she was back on her feet again.

The last few tension-soaked minutes of the game saw Bokiri spearheading counter attacking moves but Robo's Ogbonna Akudo was always on hand to stop her.
