NPFL: Onduku Slams Organisers

Former Nigerian league star, Gomo Onduku has slammed the organization of the Nigerian league, blaming it for the mass exodus of the country’s best players abroad, sometimes to obscure leagues.

Several top performers in the Nigerian league from last season have completed moves away, while some others are expected to move before the close of the January transfer window.

And this transfer to foreign clubs isn’t restricted to last season, with top players from seasons before also finding their way out of the country, and most times to obscurity.

And Gomo, who featured for Sharks and Bayelsa United before moving to Romania in 2013 believes poor organization are forcing more and more players to leave the Nigerian league prematurely.

“Some of the countries these players go to are not better than Nigeria. And it is not every club in Europe that pays regularly, just like Nigeria, but the truth is there are better regulations there,” he told Hot FM.

“Countries like Serbia, Malta, and Romania aren’t necessarily better than Nigeria but they are better organized.

“Even in Turkey, some clubs owe their players but there are regulations, unlike in Nigeria. If you’re owed in Nigeria, there’s nothing you can do about it and there’s no one to come to your rescue.

“How many South African players do you see abroad? Even Algeria. If things were better in Nigeria, nobody would be in a hurry to move abroad,” he said.
