Ibom Angels Spanks Martins White

Ibom Angels were at the attacking best as they beat Martins White 4-0 in a Nigeria Women's Premier League week three match at the Uyo Township Stadium on Saturday.

Angels dominated the game and deservedly went into the interval with a 2-0 lead. The visitors were lucky not to go down with a much wider margin. In the first half, they were helped by the cross bar, and the post denied the hosts late in the game.

The first real threat came in the 21st minute. Eunice Ujunwa broke down the right and tried to pick out Jane Godwin who had arrived in the box. The outstretched leg of Ruth Ekanem got in the way.

However, not long later, the first goal of the game arrived. The Uyo side were awarded a penalty after Helen Diotie handled the ball. Celine Ottah made no mistake from the spot, sending the ball into the top right corner.

On the half-hour mark, Angels got their second. Emem Essien delivered a fine cross after some neat work. Goalkeeper Christiana did come out to get her hand onto the ball, but danger was still lurking. Captain
Franca Odalou and Godwin were locked down in an aerial contest. Godwin proved to be the smarter of the two, out-jumping the Martins White captain to nod home from five yards.

Before the break, Ujunwa should have made it 3-0 when presented with a one-on-one with the White's goalkeeper. She wasted the chance, sending her shot onto the cross bar.

Two second half goals in the space of seven minutes sealed victory for Angels. The goals were stunning- contenders for the goal of the week award. In fact, it wouldn't be a surprise if both goals are nominated for the goal of the season award.

Minutes after goalkeeper Ibia denied Emem Essien at the near post,Captain Mary Ologbosere volleyed the ball from 27 yards. Goalkeeper Ibia couldn't stop that from going in. The goal sparked scenes of wild celebration at the Angels bench, and Ologbosere ran to her coach to celebrate.

The celebrations had barely died down when substitute Charity Reuben put the game beyond the visitors. It was yet another volley- this time from 30 yards out. Reuben hit the ball real hard. Just like Ologbosere's, White's keeper could not stop it from going in.

Ten minutes from stoppage time, Angels were denied a fifth by the upright. It was Joy Enamino who beat her marker before sending the ball into the box.

Goalkeeper Ibia was once again poor in handling a cross- spilling the ball into the path of the onrushing Emem Essien, who hit the post with her effort. Moments later, Reuben and substitute Comfort Ibia failed to make the most of yet another poor judgment from goalkeeper Ibia following  Ujunwa's lovely cross.
