Super Eagles defender Godfrey Oboabona has remained confident about
Nigeria's chances of qualifying for the 2015 AFCON, despite the recent
issues that has plagued the country's football.
Nigeria's football has been plagued by political quagmire and intrigues in the last month and there's also the small matter of not having a coach with Stephen Keshi's contract yet to be renewed.
And they have two very important qualifying matches against Congo and South Africa in September.
But Oboabona remains confident in the face of adversity, believing he and his teammates can conquer.
“We have very good players that can win games, despite the issues and we strongly believe in ourselves,” he told Brila FM.
“It hasn't been a perfect situation but I know what we are capable of.”
The Super Eagles play Congo's Red Devils on September 6 in Calabar and then face South Africa's Bafana Bafana on September 10 in Cape Town.
A list of 23 players to prosecute the games have already been announced even without a coach, but Oboabona says he trusts the abilities of his teammates and also hopes Keshi's contract is sorted before the games.
“I believe every player that has been invited for the games have huge roles to play and that is what we know,” he added.
“We must qualify for the next AFCON and we know what's at stake and hopefully the situation with the Coach must have been sorted before then.”
The former Sunshine Stars defender is expected to continue his partnership at the back with Kenneth Omeruo following Joseph Yobo's retirement, and after it was cut short at the World Cup following an injury suffered in their first game against Iran.
