Gombe United manager Augustine Eguavoen believes the 2-0 loss his wards suffered against Heartland FC in Owerri
has exposed just how much work that still needs to be done on his
resurgent side.
His side's three match winning streak came to an abrupt end courtesy of first half goals by Saibu Badarou and Jolly Osas.
"We are a team on the rise and the elementary errors that characterised the goals we conceded today must be eliminated.
“We gave those goals away. Our biggest undoing was that our
reactions were very slow to the balls from which they scored. In the
second half we changed tactics, playing a back three to have more bodies
in the midfield. It worked because we controlled the whole of the
second half but the mistake had been made already.
“In football, errors happen but the problem is at this level,
such mistakes could get punished. I'm happy how we responded in the
second half. We took the game to Heartland because of the change in
style. We still have a lot to improve on,” he told lmc-ng.org.
"It's not just about the goals, but where did the action start?
If you had put some pressure on the man with the ball, those crosses
might not have come in. Again there was a mis-communication between the
two Center backs that allowed the striker to come in and nick in the
goal,” Eguavoen added.
The former Super Eagles coach also commended the referees saying
that the level of refereeing in the League is on the rise. On the
result, he said his team will quickly brush off the disappointment and
look forward to the next game.
"The officiating wasn't bad; I've always been an apostle of good
refereeing. It is one of the things that have kept us going and if we
continue in this manner, we have a very good chance.
“Referees are humans and sometimes they make mistakes. Everybody
makes mistakes, referees, assistant referees, coaches, all can make
mistakes. Sometimes there could be confusion between the center man and
his assistants but they will discuss it and will improve in future
games.”
Gombe United next play Crown FC at home this weekend as they bid to improve on their 17th position on the log.
