Messi, Franck Ribery and Cristiano Ronaldo have made the three-man shortlist for the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award.
The trio came top in a poll of journalists from each of UEFA's member states, with the overall winner to be decided in Monaco during the Champions League group stage draw on Thursday 29 August.
This is the third edition of the award, with Andres Iniesta and Messi winning the previous two.
The Argentine forward won the Liga title with Barcelona last term, scoring 46 goals along the way.
Ronaldo was the top goalscorer in the Champions League last time out with 12, whilst Ribery guided Bayern Munich to the European title.
