~The Azerbaijan league resumed with a victory for a Nigerian. Baki lost 2-1 to Qabala in front of their home fans. 21-year-old forward Abdulwaheed Afolabi was a 46th minute entrant in the colours of the winners. He made dangerous incursions from the right-hand side of attack.


{Belgium}

~AS Eupen started the season on a high, with a 4-0 win against Boussu Dor. Their Nigerian import Anthony Bassey scored the last goal of the match in the 64th minute.

~Anderlecht rocketed four goals past hosts Cercle Bruges in a week 3 Jupiler league match played on Friday. The introduction of Michael Uchebo in place of Frederik Boi counted for nothing.

~At the Stade Maurice Dufrasne, Geoffrey Mujangi Bia outshone Imoh Ezekiel with a hat-trick for Standard Liege against Lierse. The former 36 Lions striker was on for 90 minutes.

{Denmark}

~At the MCH Arena, Sylvester Igboun’s 81th minute strike was the energy Midtjylland needed to stage a comeback against SønderjyskE.

Morten Duncan Rasmussen netted the winning strike for the hosts and the game ended 2-1.
Izunna Uzochukwu played his preferred central midfield role, while young forward Ebere Paul Onuachu came-on for Kristian Bak Nielsen.

{England}

~Leyton Orient sent warning signals to rivals with a 5-1 annihilation of Carlisle United. Moses Odubajo’s surge from right-back resulted to one of Orient’s goals. He lasted the match length.

~Crewe started the season with 3-3 draw at home to Rotherham United. Chuks Aneke was a second half substitute.

~The Bramall Lane was a bad hunting ground for 10-man Notts County, as they lost 2-1 to Sheffield United. Substitute Enoch Showunmi scored County’s only goal of the match.

~Wolverhampton Wanderers began life in the League One with a goalless draw at Preston North End. Carl Ikeme was outstanding in goal for Wolves. He made five stops.

~At the Saint Andrew’s, Ikechi Anya’s Watford defeated Tom Adeyemi’s Birmingham City one-nil. Both Nigerians featured for their respective sides and lasted the game duration.

~The season opener for big defender, Danny Shittu in the Championship in England ended in a shock 1-0 home loss for the Millwall stalwart against Yeovil Town at the Den on Saturday August 3 2013.

{International}

~Nigeria international Taiye Taiwo began his career with Turkish club Bursaspor with an away goal in the 2-2 Europa League 3rd qualifying round draw with Vojvodina on Thursday. Taiwo scored the equalizer for Bursaspor in the 90th minute to help salvage an encouraging draw ahead of the return leg in Turkey next week.

~Kehinde Fatai scored for Romanian side Astra Giurgui as they beat Trecin of Slovakia 3-1 away. The 23-year-old scored the third goal in the 58th minute and was substituted in the 78 minute with Mirko Ivanovski.

~Nosahare Igiebor was involved in a behind-closed-doors friendly loss to Manchester United. The Spanish side lost 3-0 to the Red Devils.

~Chelsea will meet Real Madrid in the final of International Champions Cup after a 2-0 win over AC Milan at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey.

Substitute Victor Moses was lively for Chelsea in the second half but continued to waste opportunities when he found himself with space on the right before redeeming himself in the latter stages with a sweet cross to Andre Schurrle that resulted in the Blues second goal.

{Norway}

~At the Haugesund Stadion, Sandnes Ulf were pushovers to Haugesund. They lost 3-1. Ugonna Anyora took his place in midfield and performed excellently in a 2-man midfield.

~Emeh Izuchukwu’s Elverum lost 3-2 at home to Kristiansund BK. The Nigerian was on the scoresheet.

~19-year-old Samuel Aaron Olanere’s 54th minute goal was not enough for Sarpsborg 08, as they lost 4-2 to Stromsgodset.

~At the Lerkendal Stadion, Rosenborg kept their title momentum moving with a 2-0 victory against Sogndal. John Chibuike lasted the length in front of his home fans.

{Poland}

~At the Stadion Miejski, the Krakow derby between Slask and Wisla ended in a boring goalless draw. Former youth winger Emmanuel Sarki was a 74th minute substitute for Wisla Krakow.

{Romania}

~It was another Kehinde Fatai show in Romania. He capped a brilliant week with a brace for his club in a league match against Corona Brasov.

{Russia}

~Kuban Krasnodar and Spartak Moscow settled for a 2-2 draw on Sunday. Super Eagles bull Emmanuel Emenike made it three goals in four matches, with a goal on the half-hour mark. However, he made way for Yura Movsisyan 19 minutes before the end of the match.

Ahmed Musa had to settle for just a 0-0 draw in the Week 4 fixture involving his team, CSKA Moscow and their host Rubin Kazan in the Russian Premier League tie played on Sunday.

{South Africa}

~Greg Etafia was the man between the sticks for Moroka Swallows as they opened their 2013/2014 PSL campaign with a slim 1-0 win over University of Pretoria on Saturday.

~Former Heartland central defender, Gege Soriola, started the South African season on a tough note as he was sent off on opening day in Free State Stars’ 4-1 loss to Supersport United.

{Sweden}

~John Owoeri’s Atvidaberg shared the spoils in an Allsvenskan League match against Gefle. The former Heartland striker lasted the length.

{Ukraine}

~Bitter rivals Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kiev took to the battle field on Sunday. However, Donbass fans rallied round their side and they were dully rewarded, as Shakhtar rolled over Dynamo with a 3-1 win. Lukman Haruna started the match and bagged a 45th minute booking, while Brown Ideye replaced Dynamo’s scorer Belhanda in the 71st minute.

{USA}

~Obafemi Martins returned to goal-scoring action as he led the rout for Seattle Sounders, the Washington side posted a 3-0 win over FC Dallas on early on Sunday.

The Super Eagles striker scored his seventh goal of the season as early as the 8th minute to kick off the big win, as Sounders closed the gap on their Western Conference rivals.

{Vietnam}

~Hoang Anh Gia Lai continued to falter in the V-League after they suffered a 3-1 loss to Thanh Hoa. Former Prime FC striker Ganiyu Bolaji Oseni scored Anh’s only goal. Bassey Akpan was in goal for Anh.

~Samson Kayode Olaleye registered his name on the scoresheet in Ha Noi T&T’s four-nil thumping of Dong Nai. The Nigerian-born ace netted a brace last week.

~The thrilling match between Xuan Thanh and Da Nang ended 3-3. Nigerian ace Moses Oloya scored a goal in the colours of Xuan.

~Sunday Emmanuel and his Bin Doung pals enjoyed a 2-1 win against visiting Song Lamh.
