The Nigerian Football Supporters Club has congratulated the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari over his success in last month’s Presidential election.
Speaking in Lagos yesterday, President General(World wide) of the club, Dr Rafiu Ladipo said Buhari’s emergence as Nigeria’s next President was not only historic but also “significant”, particularly, as the support for his candidacy cut across the length and breadth of the country.
“It is our hope that the President-elect would use this tremendous goodwill shown by Nigerians in developing sports which is a critical sector in the polity,” Ladipo said.
He enjoined the President-elect to reignite his charm, charisma and support for sport just as he did when Nigeria became the first African country to lift a FIFA trophy in 1985. “We recall with pride the contributions of General Buhari to Nigeria’s success story in the 1985 FIFA U-17 tournament and believe that he can do it again as a civilian president.”
Ladipo also spared a thought for President Goodluck Jonathan whom he described as “the hero of our time,” for his contributions to the development of sports in the country. “President Jonathan’s support for sports was legendary and we will never forget him.”
The NFSC boss however, noted with regret, that President Jonathan’s contributions were being undermined by the current form of the senior national team, the Super Eagles. “It’s so sad that low quality teams from different countries now come here and beat us in our backyard.”
The club boss also asked out-of-contract Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi to sign the new contract the NFF has offered him without further delay. “Keshi should sign the contract now’’, Ladipo said.
