Flying Eagles assistant coach Nduka
Ugbade has revealed his frustration after the 4-2 loss to Brazil in the
opening game of their U-20 World Cup campaign in New Zealand.
Before the tournament began there was a
huge amount of optimism surrounding the Flying Eagles, with many
suggesting this is the best crop of youth players in the country’s
history.
However, expectations were dampened somewhat in the early hours of Monday morning as Nigeria were beaten 4-2 by Brazil.
“It was a very bad result, the 4-2 loss
to Brazil. I never expected it was going to be like that even though we
understood that we were confronted with difficult opponents. It’s not a
match we should lose the way it turned out,” Football411.com quoted Ugbade as saying.
“We
created several chances but could not maximise the opportunities and
got punished. I believe a lot of things went wrong in the clash.”
The Flying Eagles would’ve fancied their
chances at half time with the score at 2-2 after coming from behind, but
two key errors by goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo handed Brazil the victory.
“Discipline is key for any endeavour and we didn’t see more of it especially in the second half of the match,” he added.
“The players appeared to have lost
complete concentration in the half, a performance that suggested they
were afraid of their opponents.
“Right now, we are condemned to beat
Korea and Hungary to amass six points that will see us progress to the
next round of the championship.”
