European Women Championship
It is one of the longest running hegemonies in world football. Germany’s 20-year grip on the European crown is, however, set to come under greater threat than it has done at any stage over the past two decades.
The 2013 UEFA Women’s EURO commences on Wednesday in Sweden with the 12-nation tournament concluding on 28 July in Solna. Whether Germany are lifting the trophy in just under three weeks remains to be seen, but should Silvia Neid’s side retain their crown it will surely rank as one of their greatest triumphs. Six squad members have been forced to miss a summer trip to Sweden with the absentees including defenders Babett Peter and Verena Faisst, midfielder Viola Odebrecht, the versatile Linda Bresonik, plus two heroines of the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup triumph; Alexandra Popp and Kim Kulig.
Women’s football has grown at an incredible speed over the past decade meaning a levelling of the field, and the rise of several major challengers to Germany’s crown. Whatever occurs over the coming weeks, the quality and intensity of the tournament is assured. Similarly off the field it seems Sweden, one of the traditional strongholds of the women’s game, will be a more than fitting host. As Sweden captain Caroline Seger observed about the tournament build-up, “it feels like there's something big happening.”
Swedes set to impress
Group A is headlined by Sweden who are aiming to join a list of four previous host nations to win on home soil. It is however, a feat that has not been achieved since Germany did so 12 years ago. The enigmatic Italians have talent to burn in attack, which is spearheaded by the tournament’s oldest player; the still-prolific Patrizia Panico. Big guns primed to fire
It remains to be seen if Germany’s squad - relatively inexperienced by their own lofty standards - feel the weight of expectation or flourish because of it. The statistics are certainly staggering. Germany have won 19 consecutive matches at the tournament dating to 1997, while their unbeaten run stretches for 26 matches all the way back to 1993. Striker Celia Okoyino da Mbabi, who was the continent’s top scorer during qualifying, believes the change in personnel opens up fresh opportunities: “It is a huge opportunity for the team to show what it is capable of, and players who might not have featured in different circumstances can make headlines.”
Arguably the biggest challenge to the champions in Group B is presented by Norway who, boosted by a string of richly talented teenagers, are a side on the up. Under wily veteran coach Even Pellerud, Norway have had some mixed results recently, but notably defeated Japan en route to third place at the prestigious Algarve Cup earlier this year. Messi & Ronaldo on award shortlist
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are among a 10-man shortlist nominated for the 2012/13 UEFA Best Player in Europe award.
The Clasico duo have been named alongside four Bayern Munich players, two more from the Premier League and one representing Ligue 1.
The award, which was set up in 2011 by Michel Platini is to honour and celebrate the best player on the continent.
The accolade is voted for by journalists from each of UEFA's member states. Each journalist provided a list of their five best-ranked players.
The players are then ordered from one to five, with the first receiving five points, the second four points and so on.
The award will be handed out on August 29 in Monaco during the group stage draw for the Champions League.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister feels England striker Wayne Rooney should finish his career at Old Trafford and there is not better place for him if he decides to leave the club.

Villa passes medical, praised by Atleti's supremo
David Villa has already passed his medical examination at Atletico Madrid ahead of completing a move from Barcelona.
On from yesterday’s announcement that Atleti had agreed a €5.1m deal to sign the 31-year-old from Barca, the player arrived in the Spanish capital in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Atleti have now confirmed that Villa has passed a preliminary medical examination, held at a clinic in Majadahonda, Madrid.
It is expected that the player will then head over to the club’s training centre for further tests and to finalise terms of his move, ahead of an expected presentation a week today, on July 16.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has enthused at his club’s capture of David Villa from Barcelona.

A dramatic 121st-minute goal from Ebenezer Assifuah has taken Ghana through to the semi-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup with a thrilling 4-3 win over Chile at Istanbul’s Ali Sami Yen Arena. The Black Satellites hero’s strike, his second of the match, completed a remarkable comeback in extra time and set up a last-four date with France on Wednesday.
This was a match that always promised goals and it did not take long for it to live up to expectations, with Ghana taking the lead inside 11 minutes. They did so with a strike that is sure to feature in the goal of the tournament, with 16-year-old Moses Odjer the player responsible. Controlling Frank Acheampong's chipped cross on his chest, Odjer stepped forward on to the dropping ball, waited for it to reach the perfect height and smashed a beautifully struck right-foot volley into the top corner from 15 yards.
Ghana were good value for their lead at this stage but Chile always looked threatening on the break and midway through the first half they levelled matters with an equally spectacular goal. Christian Bravo was its architect, stealing possession in midfield and playing in Nicolas Castillo at the angle of the box. The in-form striker still had plenty to do but he continued his goal-a-game record at Turkey 2013 with a rocket of a shot, sent crashing into the roof of the net at Eric Antwi’s near post.

Thrills and spills for Korea Republic
The thriving Korean film industry is known for its breathlessly suspenseful crime thrillers, with films such as The Chaser by Na Hongjin and Kim Jeewoon’s I Saw the Devil featuring near the top of most film buff’s lists.
Judging by their performances at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013, there is no doubting that Korea Republic’s young players are well-versed in their country’s movie culture. Throughout the tournament they have given chase to their adversaries and have been involved in more than their fair share of plot twists. The latest of them came in the Hitchcockian finale to their quarter-final with Iraq, a cliffhanger that ended with their untimely demise.
“My players have been well-organised from start to finish,” said the Korea Republic director, ahem, coach Lee Kwangjong after his side’s agonising exit against the Lions of Mesopotamia. “Not many people believed in us but we proved we could go far. We’ve gradually improved and I can only thank my players for having believed in my ideas and for following them to the letter of the law.”
The Taeguk Warriors’ Turkish adventure got off to a dramatic start when they fell behind after just seven minutes of their opening match against unfancied Cuba. The Caribbean side’s hopes of a fairytale outcome were dashed by Kwon Changhoon and Ryu Seungwoo, who scored second-half goals to give the South Koreans the win. In their next group game, against Portugal, the Asian side did it the hard way again, twice coming from behind to score a 2-2 draw that all but secured their place in the next round.
That fightback was a turning point for Kwangjong’s players, who showed that they could hold their own against Europe’s big-name acts.
After playing a starring role in Sunday’s blockbuster against the Iraqis, Lee Gwanghun said: “We’ve shown we can challenge the best, including the European sides. That’s the main lesson here. We always think that they’re better than us, but we’ve shown that when we play as a team, we are as good as they are.”

Cue scenes of joy among the Korea Republic contingent.
Yet more nerve-shredding drama was to come as this South Korean thriller hurtled towards its denouement. In Sunday’s quarter-final against Iraq the never-say-die East Asians clawed themselves level on no fewer than three occasions, tying the score at 3-3 in the 122nd minute of the match.
Jung Hyuncheol, the scorer of that miraculous third equaliser, took up the story: “When I came on I said to myself that I would have to fight to the death. I went crazy when I scored and it was the greatest moment of my career. We ended up losing but it was still an incredible tournament.”
The thriller had to come to an end, and as any connoisseur of South Koreans films will tell you, they are not known for their happy endings. The fall guy on this occasion was Lee Gwanghun, the hero of the hour just three days earlier against the Colombians. Grief-stricken after missing the decisive kick against the Iraqis, he said: “I am really sorry for my team-mates and my coach. We nearly made it. We were so close to reaching the semis for the first time in 30 years.”
While the Asian champions would no doubt have preferred a different outcome, they can leave Turkey safe in the knowledge that they turned in a memorable performance. That much was confirmed by the wily Park Jonghwan, the man who coached the country’s U-20s at Mexico 1983, the last time they reached the semi-finals: “Our players were good enough to go all the way this time, and I’m disappointed. I am proud of them, though, because they played a great match in the quarter-finals.”
The young Reds will next go for glory at the 2014 Asian Games, where a defiant Lee Gwanghun will be hoping for his big break: “I’m going to go home and train hard so I can win titles with this team. I want to be part of the side that takes part in the Asian Games next year and I’m also dreaming of the Olympic Games.”

Monaco confirms Abidal swoop
Monaco have made official the news today that they have signed former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal.
The Frenchman left the Camp Nou after six seasons this summer, having failed to agree terms on a new non-playing contract with Barca, out of the desire to continue his playing career.
The 33-year-old, who returned to full fitness last term after a liver transplant, was subsequently linked with a move back to Ligue 1, whilst Sunday indicated that a deal with newly promoted Monaco had been reached.
Today has seen the principality outfit confirm through their official website a one-year deal for Abidal, with an option in place to extend into a second year. Monday will see the club present the player to the media too.

Villa moves to Atletico Madrid
Barcelona have announced that they have reached a deal with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of striker David Villa.
The 31-year-old has been strongly linked going into this summer with a transfer out of the Camp Nou, with the latest reports today suggesting that Tottenham Hotspur had taken a lead in negotiations.
However, Barca have confirmed through their official website that Atletico have agreed a deal to sign the No 7 for a total fee of just €5.1m.

Let's make the NWFL grow, enough of disobeying rules and regulation of the league body
Staging walk-outs by teams has become a common thrend in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).
Trust away sides; they claim the referee is biased and favours the home team. I was at the Ogbe Stadium when some groups of players were bitter with the Centre Referee's performance in a league match. For me the CR did well in her handling of the game.
Earlier in the season, debutants Taraba Queens twice lost at their abode, but no one complained about poor officiating or favouritism on the part of the match officials.
The second round begun with teams believing Jalingo is the best place to get points. Not to be left out in qualifying for the Elite League, the management of the club beefed up the squad and since then the girls have improved in their level of play.
More on the saga, FC Robo's players lost to Taraba Queens in the last 5 minutes after two good penalties were awarded against them. The away team complained but I made them understand that the spot kicks were duly justified. Despite their agitations, they didn't walk-out on their opponent.
Sunshine Queens and River Angels also played at the Akure Township Stadium with the current Fed Cup Queens deciding to abandon the match. What was their reason? The referee was not capable to handle such a high tempo encounter.
Police Machine have thrice dropped points (Ibom Angels 1-1, Rivers Angels 1-2 and Bayelsa Queens 0-1) at the Police College this season. The officials were fantastic in the discharge of their duties. Did anyone complain that the Centre Referee wasn't capable?
Shettima FC were taught the game of soccer by Delta Queens after losing 8-0 to the current league Queens, yet no one staged a walk-out.
Nasarawa Amazons held FC Robo to a one-all draw at the Legacy Pitch, Surelere. The centre-referee somehow missed a poor challenge on Robo's Chiwendu in the 88th minute. What happened? The homers accepted their fate.
Osun Babes took laws to their hands by staging an abandonment of their NWFL week 16 match against Taraba Queens in Jalingo. Osun didn't play well enough to get a positive result on Saturday. A brilliant header by Ngozi in the 67th minute after Abiodun Omolola's opener saw the travellers deciding not to go-on with the tie.
Recently, FCT Queens lost 5-1 to Rivers. Angels in front of their home fans; I don't think anyone castigated the match officials.
Teams just look for ways to cover up their flaws by always blaming the guys in black whenever things don't swing in their favour. My stats tells me that we have covered 73 NWFL matches this season and 92% of the games went well.
This is a clarion call to the league body on the need to send Independent Assessors to venues. They should also improve on the level of security personels attached to matches and also renumerate officials properly for better performance.
Finally, strict measures must be put in place to punish erring teams that don't follow the rules and regulation of the NWFL.

Crete takes Zvasiya on loan
Kaizer Chiefs' Lincolin Zvasiya has secured a loan deal to Greece side OFI Crete from Kaizer Chiefs.
Zvasiya joined the Glamour Boys in 2011.
The Kaizer Chiefs website said the defender, who still have two years on his contract, has secured a one-year loan deal with the Greek side.
The former FC Platinum defender didn't get enough game time in defence which also has Bafana Bafana defenders such as Siboniso Gaxa, Tsepo Masilela and Morgan Gould who later got sidelined by an injury towards the end of the season.
Kaizer Chiefs have strong faith in Zimbabwean players who in turn have delivered for the side.
All the foreign players at the club are from here, which has given Chiefs a huge following in this country.
The other Zimbabwean players at Chiefs are Zhaimu Jambo, Willard Katsande and Mathew Rusike, Nkhatha and outgoing Zvasiya.
Home at last, Musona back to familiar terrain
Zimbabwe international striker Knowledge Musona described his two-year stay in Germany as a very tough period for him and has returned to Kaizer Chiefs, on a loan deal from Bundesliga TSG Hoffenheim, to try and revive his career.
The South African Premiership champions have an option to finally buy the player.
The Warriors striker moved to Europe in August 2011 amid high expectations but failed to command a regular place in the team.
"My stay in Germany was tough especially as l didn't get much game time due to changes in management at both teams that l played for," Musona told the official Chiefs website.
After one season he found himself loaned to another Bundesliga side FC Augsburg last season. Again he lacked game time at the club.
The fact that both clubs ended up fighting relegation in the ended season did not help matters for Musona as he failed to really settle.
There have been a lot of speculation over the future of Musona and before the season ended he snubbed an offer by SuperSport United officials, who were in Germany for a workshop, to have the player return to Absa Premiership and join the Pretoria side.
Even when he was back home during the World Cup qualifiers he was quoted saying his future was still in the Bundesliga where he signed a five-year-contract.
But Musona, who will always have a special bond with the club where he cut his professional teeth in 2009, finally opted to return home and revive his waning career.
Surprisingly, while his career abroad appeared to be stagnant, whenever Musona returned home, he impressed for the Warriors and scored regularly for his national team.
The player's management team and the Kaizer Chiefs leadership successfully negotiated the terms and Amakhosi announced on the the club's website that they have secured Musona for the 2013/2014 season which gets underway next month.
During his fruitful stint with Amakhosi, he won the Rookie of the Year in 2009/2010 season before winning the Golden Boot the following season when he scored 15 goals in 28 matches.
Musona, told the official Kaizer Chiefs website that he was happy to be back home.
"There is nothing much to say --Kaizer Chiefs is my team and my first home.
"I am happy to be back. And looking forward to the season and working with the players and the technical team.
"Any jersey number will do for me, as I don't play a number, l play football.
"I always checked Chiefs results on line. And was happy to see that PSL has become tough, there is no longer a small team and was also happy to see the league getting stronger," said Musona.
Kaizer Chiefs football manager, Bobby Motaung, was also quoted saying they finalised a series of meetings last morning.
"Bringing back Musona signals our intentions as we prepare for what promises to be a competitive season following the league and Cup double achievements of the 2012 -- 2013 season.

"I noticed that my two holding midfielder where becoming weak and Gambo Mohammed was still doing the job. So, I left him on the pitch because I needed to balance if I make any changes. That is why most of my changes came from the midfield," he concluded.
The tactician is set to inject fresh legs to beef up the squad from the Glo Premier League, with the second leg due to take place in Abidjan, in two weeks time, on his radar.
He lambasted his defenders for letting in a cheap goal at the end of the first half. He also praised the flavour added to the team by some regulars in the main team.
"We have practised how defenders close down attackers in the box area in training, but unfortunately the defenders didn't do well to defend. It only means we still have a lot of work to do,” he said.
"However I must confess that the experience of several players, Sunday Mba, Godfrey Oboabona, Azubike Egwuekwe and even Gambo Mohammed who were at the Confederations Cup, paid off in this game."

The Nigeria Senior National Side will clash with their South African counterparts on Wednesday August 14, to mark the annual Mandela Challenge Cup. The match has been fixed for the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Ghana moves to the next stage
The
Confederation of African Football (CAF) wishes to announce the
withdrawal of Benin from the qualifiers of the 3rd Edition of the Orange
CHAN, South Africa 2014.
Benin was initially supposed to play the1stleg 1st round of the qualifiers against Ghana this weekend in Ghana.
Consequently the above mentioned matches are cancelled and Ghana is qualified to the final tournament.
The Final Tournament will be held from the 10thof January to the 1st of February in South Africa.

Inter have leapfrogged Juventus in the race for Manchester City man Aleksandar Kolarov.
The left-back has said he is eager to leave the Etihad this summer so that he can play more regular first-team football.
Up until now Juve had been the absolute favourites for the 27-year-old former Lazio player.
The Nerazzurri are raising funds by terminating the contract of Dejan Stankovic, therefore saving on his hefty wages.

The 23-year-old Mexican international has been the subject of interest from several teams, including Anderlecht and Celta Vigo, but the player himself has sent a message via the social networks that could be interpreted as the key to his future.
“Everything is speculation and nobody knows the truth,” he posted.
Reports in the Spanish media have stated that the Belgians are willing to pay the €4m transfer fee being demanded by Barca, although at the moment negotiations appear to have stalled.
However, the Spanish champions are keen to offload a player who made just three La Liga appearances last term, something they unsuccessfully attempted 12 months ago.
Messi is untouchable- Pique
Gerard Pique has rejected Johan Cruyff’s suggestion that Barcelona may plan for Lionel Messi’s sale, and defended the club’s reliance on the No 10.
Former player, Coach and honorary President Cruyff last week suggested that the Catalans should only have signed Neymar this summer if they were preparing to sell Messi, to avoid possible conflict between the two.
However, it is not a view shared by one of Messi’s teammates.
“He is the best player in the world and has given us so much that it is inconceivable that he would not be here,” Pique told Sport today.
“Are we Messi-dependent? It has been so in recent years, we know his importance and it would be foolish not to use him.
“When you have the best player in the world, why would you not use him? It would not make sense.
“His persona? Around him there is much fuss, but he is normal, his image is perceived on the outside.
“He is calm and fits in very well. Being the star that he is, he lives life naturally.
“Neymar’s arrival? People are used to living among big players.”
The defender was asked of the prospect of Barca signing Thiago Silva.
“If he were to arrive, he would be welcome. Great players are always welcome at the Camp Nou and a player of his features works perfectly.”
There are reports that the club want to sign Pique to a new contract.
“So far we have not sat down to talk, but if the club wants to continue and so do I, there will be no problems.”
I miss United- Ronaldo

The 28-year-old has been continually linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu amid reports that he is stalling on contract negotiations with Los Blancos, still unhappy with the club.
One club rumoured to be interested in making a move for the Portuguese is former side Manchester United.
“I really miss English football. I had one of my best years at Manchester United,” today conceded Ronaldo during a visit to Singapore where he is taking part in a mentoring scheme for young footballers.
“Everyone knows that it is a club that is still in my heart.
“I miss them but now my life is in Spain, I love playing there too, part of my life is there.
“In the future you never know, but I am very happy in the Spanish League right now.”
Ronaldo, who was pictured during his trip to a Singapore secondary school being shown a video of his time when at United, was asked of Barcelona’s capture of Neymar.
“I just think about my team, Real Madrid. I do not care if one, two, three or four players are bought. That means nothing to me.
“Barcelona has bought a very good player, they have an excellent team. But I play for Real Madrid, the best team in the world.

Rangers sent packing by CAF
Nigeria’s Enugu Rangers have been kicked out of the CAF Confederation Cup after they fielded an ineligible player versus Sfaxien of Tunisia.
According to an official statement by CAF, goalkeeper Daniel Emmanuel was not properly registered for the competition, but was fielded by Rangers in their qualifying matches against Sfaxien.
Rangers won the first leg in Enugu 1-0 and held the Tunisians to a goalless draw in the return fixture.
The Tunisian club have thus replaced Rangers in Group A of the Confederation Cup.
The other teams in the group are Stade Malien of Mali, Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia and Saint Georges from Ethiopia.

Madrid add Jovetic to options
Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly added Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic to Real Madrid’s list of strikers to consider this summer.
Los Merengues are seen as in the market for a forward this summer, in light of Gonzalo Higuain’s expected departure.
Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez have primarily been linked, but their high valuations of €63m and €47m respectively has Madrid apparently considering other options too, in light of otherwise pooling resources to fund a €90m move for Gareth Bale.
Reports in England suggest that former Arsenal and Juventus target Jovetic is one such alternative, lower-priced forward that the capital club are now considering.
It is understood that Ancelotti has added the 23-year-old to the club’s list of possible recruitments this summer.
Jovetic has previously been valued by his club at €30m, but it is believed that a bidding from Madrid may start at €22m.
Krasic on Bremen horizon
Werder Bremen are interested in Fenerbahçe 28 year old winger Milos Krasic. The former CSKA Moscow and Juventus star is also attracting interests in the English Premier League.

Ronaldo the best in the word- Ramos
Sergio Ramos has lavished praise on Cristiano Ronaldo, calling his Real Madrid teammate 'the best in the world'.
The Portugal interational has been linked with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu this summer, with the 28-year-old's contract at the club set to run out in 2015.
And the Spanish full-back has admitted that he is desperate for the forward to renew at Los Blancos.
“Last season, for me, he was the best in the world,” Ramos told Mundo Deportivo. “He deserves to win whatever he wants to win.
“I hope the club directors are trying to renew his deal to keep him at Madrid.”
