THE RISE OF CHIKELUBA OFOEDU........COMPILED BY ABAYOMI ADEMETAN

At a time when big boys like Igho Otegheri,Chike Ogoguo,Uche Ogochukwu,Michael Uchebo and a hosts of others failed to impress;a youngster leapt in the 2012 season and duly took his chance in the colours of Enugu Rangers.

Chikeluba Francis Ofoedu is a Nigerian forward,born in Enugu,on 12th November,1992.

"Pato" as he is fondly called by fans and technocrats of the game made defenders look ordinary in the grassroot level of football in Enugu.Despite his young age and size, his coaches were never afraid to entrust him with tasking responsibilities during key games.

Chikeluba Ofoedu is the type of player you only need to watch once to be impressed, he’s obviously having a great run of form at the moment. Ofoedu is a quite stocky, athletically built player. Very mobile and ceases every little opportunity to mount tireless pressure on opposing defenders. His ball control is terrific, and his ability to hold unto the ball is also good, his footwork is also good. A striking thing about this player is the aura of confidence and self-belief.

He made waves as the talisman of University Teaching Hospital Football Club, banging in the goals during his football apprenticeship,in the amateur cadre. He was twice the topscorer in the Nigeria Nationwide League 2.

In January 2012, Chikeluba Ofoedu and Brendan Ogbu travelled to Tunisia for a two-week trial at Espérance Sportive de Tunis.

None of the players won a contract at the Tunisian side and Ogbu signed for Heartland FC instead.

His talents was noticed by Enugu Rangers' scouts and he was given the chance to impress. The idea was to replace him with the more experienced Ogbu.
Ofoedu is a “good finisher” who dribbles very well, takes on defenders with reckless abandon and can shoot very well with both feet. Further, he was described as an “all-round attacker who takes risks to find the back of the net in every game he plays.

He made his Nigeria Premier League bow against Kaduna United.Although he fired blanks,he was given rave reviews by fans and pundits of the game.It wouldn't take too long as the fair-skinned starlet, netted a brace against Kano Pillars in Enugu.

He continued his blistering form and was voted the best player for the month of March, alongside team gaffer Okey Emordi.

Chikeluba Ofoedu became a sensation during the first 12 rounds of the Nigeria Premier League 2012.He was the top scorer at Enugu Rangers, with 6 goals,an average of 0.5 per match.

Before the mid-season,speculations were rife that Sochaux and Etoile du Sahel had sent scouts to observe the fast-rising lad during a league match Rangers played against archrivals,Shooting Stars.

His hardwork was duly rewarded when Rosenborg took him on a 14-day trial,on the recommendation of John Chibuike, his childhood pal.He scored 6 goals during the trial period, but it was not enough to convince the Eliteserien  giants.

During this period, the Flying Antelopes missed his inspiration upfront,as they were toppled by Kano Pillars as league leaders.

He returned home to help Rangers in the Cup and NPL quests. The fleet-footed forward grabbed two goals in the 2012 NFF Fed Cup.

In September 3rd 2012,the management of the Enugu-based outfit declared that the striker had gone AWOL.

News filtered-in from Turkey that the tricky Pato had penned a deal at 1461 Trabzon.

He made a goalscoring debut in the colours of the TTF 1 side,in a league match against Adanaspor.13 minutes after coming on for Mustafa, the former UNTH and Enugu Rangers attacker notched the equaliser,in the 58th minute. The soft-spoken forward known by admirers as ''Pato'' warmed himself to the hearts of 1461 Trabzon fans with the winning strike in the 65th minute of action. He was voted MVP at the end of the tension-socked match.

He also highlighted his importance with some cup goals notably,a blinder against Galatasaray.

His excellent performance has catapulted 1461 Trabon to a place in one of the promotion slots,as only four points seperates them from the top spot..

He has been tipped to be a leading light in the next Nigeria U-23 squad and a future Super Eagles star.

GIGGS PENS NEW DEAL

Ryan Giggs, who is set to make his 1,000th appearance in senior football this weekend, has signed a new one-year contract at Manchester United, the club announced on Friday.

The English Premier League leaders said the deal keeps the 39-year-old Wales winger at Old Trafford until June 2014 and sees him complete a 23rd season as a first-team player.

Coach Alex Ferguson told manutd.com: "What can I say about Ryan that hasn't already been said? He is a marvellous player and an exceptional human being. Ryan is an example to us all, the way in which he has, and continues to, look after himself.

"He has fantastic energy for the game and it is wonderful to see. Ryan seems to reach a new milestone every week and to think that he now has 23 unbroken years of league goals behind him is truly amazing in the modern-day game.

"His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever and I am absolutely delighted that he has signed a new contract."

Giggs signed professional forms with United in 1990 and made his debut on March 2, 1991. He has made 931 appearances for the club -- a Manchester United record -- and scored 168 goals.
He has been capped 64 times for Wales and played four times for the British Olympic men's football team at last year's London Games.

During his impressive storied career, he has won 12 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, two Champions Leagues, one Super Cup, an Intercontinental Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup.
Giggs said he was "delighted" to have signed a new contract and despite his advancing years said he was "feeling good, enjoying my football more than ever and, most importantly, I feel I am making a contribution to the team".

He added: "This is an exciting team to be part of, with great team spirit, and we are again pushing for trophies as we head towards the business end of the season."

Ferguson told a news conference later that he believed Giggs will stay at Manchester United in a coaching capacity when he finally hangs up his boots, which could help him if he eventually decides to take on a managerial role.

"Several players are still involved in the club. It is important we install players who have been involved here. It is important if anyone has ambitions to be a manager you should take on various roles before you get there," he added.

Giggs' landmark 1,000th game comes against Norwich City on Saturday, which could see United move 15 points clear at the top of the league before rivals Manchester City face struggling Aston Villa on Monday night.

"Norwich is an important one," Ferguson told reporters. "Tuesday (against Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League) will look after itself, it's an occasion on Tuesday.

"Norwich is where our concentration is on. The players will not be thinking about Tuesday because all week we have been talking about Norwich."

Robin van Persie returned to training this week and is available for both games, Ferguson said. The striker injured his hip when he collided with a camera man during their win over Queens Park Rangers last weekend.

Phil Jones, however, faces a battle to make the Madrid game due to a troublesome knee injury.

Premier League Interests For Julian Draxler

Schalke attacking midfielder Julian Draxler is being watched by English Premier League sides,Manchester United and Arsenal.

Chelsea are also interested in bringing the starlet  to England, although also in the race are Etihad giants Manchester City and Arsenal.

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt, has admitted that the speculation linking the midfielder with a move away from the Veltins-Arena is tangible.

"There has always been reported interest from top European clubs," said Heldt. "And now we have had inquiries for Julian.

"But this is not a topic for us. A sale is not up for discussion.""

DECISION DAY

Chelsea followers will decide Rafa Benitez's fate this weekend against West Bromwich Albion.

Owner Roman Abramovich will review Benitez’s position as Chelsea’s caretaker  gaffer  after gauging fans  reaction at Saturday’s clash with West Bromwich.

Benitez made  fans cross by criticising them moments after his side had secured an FA Cup quarter-final bearth with Manchester United by beating Middlesbrough 2-0 at the Riverside on Wednesday night.

Abramovich is already considering his options after Benitez was called in for crisis talks with Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay at the training ground on Thursday."

AC Milan makes Bojan a priority

AC Milan supremo, Silvio Berlusconi has made clear that his club want to sign Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic.

The forward who is on-loan from the Camp Nou is highly rated by top clubs in Europe.

"We consider Bojan to be a very useful player because of the quality that he has and his vision of the game,''Berlusconi said.

"Bojan is in our plans for the future and we believe that we can make him ours."

MANCINI TARGETS SANCHEZ

Manchester City gaffer  Roberto Mancini is eyeing Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez.

The Citizens manager Mancini wanted to buy winger Sanchez after he caught the eye for Chile in the 2010 World Cup finals.

Sanchez, 24, preferred an ambitious  move to Barcelona but has become unsettled by limited opportunities.

Also cycling the talented winger are Juventus,Chelsea and Inter Milan
