No regrets says Ajayi

Former Crown star, Femi Ajayi, has expressed satisfaction with his decision to switch international allegiance to Republic of Benin.

Now called Adjai, the player who played for Crown in the club’s first campaign in the Glo Premier League during the 2010/11 season has joined a long list of Nigerians, in the Squirrels.

Ajayi was invited for matches against Liberia and Nigeria, in 2012, by Super Eagles supremo, Stephen Keshi, but wasn’t capped for any match.

“I left for Republic of Benin in 2012 and got a chance to play for the national Under-20 side during the 2013 Africa Youth Championship (AYC) qualifiers. Benin eventually qualified but we failed to progress in Algeria.

"I’ve since made my debut for the Under-23 team and the Squirrels. It was a decision difficult to accept, but God knows best,” Ajayi said to supersport.com.

Ajayi was called alongside Jean Ogoutchi for the international friendly against Libya, in Tunisia and was in the team that finished fourth at the GOtv Wafu Cup.

The duo had earlier represented Benin at the French West Africa tourney in Abidjan.

Nigerians who have played for Benin include assistant coach, Moussa Latoudji, Jonas Oketola, Muri Ogunbiyi, FC Taraba goalkeeper Olaniyi Fabiyi, Bello Babatounde, Razak Omotoyossi, Salomon Junior, who made his Nigerian league debut with Bayelsa United and Isaac Loute amongst others.

Ajayi left Crown FC for Pobe-based JA Plateau in 2012.

Kwara United goalie switch to Bayelsa United

Ex-Nigeria youth international Kazeem Yekeen has joined Bayelsa United ahead of the 2013/2014 Nigeria league season.

Goalkeeper Yekeen played for relegated Kwara United last season and told a reliable source that he has now agreed personal terms with the Yenegoa-based team.

"I am in Bayelsa United now, we have agreed terms. I am happy to be with the team. I am in Bayelsa for a new challenge and to achieve greatness," he told the source.

"I want to win the league and CAF Confederation Cup with this team and it is not beyond us."

He said it was a difficult decision to quit Kwara United.

"I will miss the Kwara United fans. The team is a very good side who give young players time and chance to blossom. They take good care of players, but I have to go and face new challenge,” he said.

“They really supported me and I can't forget the team because they make me who I am today."

He joined Kwara United in 2009/2010 season

Super Eagles striker survives the executioners axe

Bright Dike survived the sack after Toronto FC announced they have parted ways with seven players including former Wales striker Robert Earnshaw.

Toronto declined their option on Earnshaw despite the fact that the 31-year-old scored eight goals in his first MLS season to emerge as team top scorer.

However, Toronto’s new leadership has expressed a desire to acquire a Designated Player at the striker position, leaving Earnshaw’s future in doubt.

Toronto also declined 2013 options on former US international Bobby Convey and midfielders Darel Russell and Michael Thomas. Forwards Danny Koevermans and Justin Braun and goalkeeper Stefan Frei remain out of contract.

Meanwhile, the club exercised contract options on 12 players, while nine players are already under contract for the 2014 season.

TFC picked up the contract options on goalkeepers Joe Bendik, Chris Konopka and Quillan Roberts; defenders Gale Agbossoumonde, Mark Bloom and Ryan Ricther; midfielders Kyle Bekker, Reggie Lambe and Jeremy Hall; forwards Bright Dike, Emery Welshman and Andrew Wiedeman.

“We are writing a new story for TFC, and it begins with our current players,” Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. "We have not had a solid core group like this in a long time, and this core is prepared and excited about taking this club to the next level. We will continue discussing the possibility of returning next season with those players whose options were declined.”

Xavi, a doubt for Granada

Barcelona say midfielder Xavi Hernandez is doubtful for Saturday's Spanish league match against Granada.

The Spanish champions say medical tests have revealed that Xavi has a muscle strain in his left leg. They say the rate of his recovery will determine his availability for the upcoming game at Camp Nou.

Barcelona will be missing top scorer Lionel Messi, is out for six-to-eight weeks with a left hamstring tear.

The club says that midfielder Cesc Fabregas has returned to training with his teammates after his injured right knee kept him from traveling with Spain's national squad this week. Xavi was left off the Spain squad to rest.

Manchester City star puts two past Begovic

Sergio Aguero scored twice to give Argentina a 2-0 win over fellow World Cup finalists Bosnia in a friendly at the Busch baseball stadium in St Louis, Missouri on Monday.

Aguero, wearing the number 10 shirt in absence of injured captain Lionel Messi, could have registered a hat-trick but blasted the ball over the bar in the 75th minute after goalkeeper Asmir Begovic had parried a shot from his strike partner Rodrigo Palacio.

Argentina, who played out a goalless draw with Ecuador in New Jersey on Friday, ended their US tour unbeaten as coach Alejandro Sabella tried two experimental line-ups and tested defensive variations.

Ghana qualifies for World Cup, Burkina Faso misses out

Ghana have qualified for the World Cup with a 7-3 aggregate win over Egypt in the playoffs to seize the fourth of five African places available at the finals.

Egypt won Tuesday's second leg 2-1 in the first international in Cairo in two years, but Ghana progressed because of their 6-1 win at home in the first leg last month.

Amr Zaki scored in the 25th minute and Gedo in the 84th for Egypt. Kevin Prince-Boateng scored Ghana's goal on the counter in the 89th.

The 2010 quarter-finalist joins Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Cameroon at the showcase in Brazil next year.

Meanwhile, Burkina Faso were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Algeria, thereby halting a clean sweep for West Africa. The Stallions lost on away goal rule for the continent's final place at the World Cup.

I'm not untouchable in Stamford Bridge declares Brazilian

Chelsea and Brazil midfielder Oscar insists he is not "untouchable" at Chelsea, despite having won steadfast support from Blues coach Jose Mourinho.

Earlier this year Mourinho declared Oscar was his first-choice No.10 and the 22-year-old has not disappointed with five goals and two assists from 11 matches this season.

But Oscar says he does not take his starting place for granted, either with Chelsea or the Luiz Felipe Scolari-coached Selecao. "I don't feel untouchable. I always try to give my best and for that reason they (the coaches) like me," Oscar told O Globo on Monday.

The former Sao Paulo and Internacional prodigy said both coaches were "winners", bringing different qualities to their respective teams.

"They have different styles," Oscar said.

"Scolari is used to coaching national teams and Mourinho clubs. Both are very successful. They are professionals as well as winners."

In a wide-ranging interview, Oscar affirmed there was a lighter side to Mourinho, suggesting the 50-year-old Portuguese is misunderstood.

"He is very different to the what people see from the outside," Oscar said."He jokes quite a lot. What he says grabs the headlines because he says what he thinks is needed for the team to benefit.

Fenerbahce defender still on Big Boss' radar

Nigeria national team head coach Stephen Keshi has once again admitted that the door to his squad is still open to Joseph Yobo.

Super Eagles skipper has not played in an international game since January when he lifted AFCON trophy, but The Big Boss hinted that he may return soon.

"Yobo is very much alive in this team than any other player. Yobo and I spoke before the game (vs Ethiopia) and our ambition is to make sure that he gets that 100th cap and by God’s grace he will get it," Keshi revealed.

The 33-year-old Fenerbahce defender made 95 appearances for Super Eagles and scored 7 goals since 2001.

Super Eagles ratings against Italy

8 Austin Ejide

The stand-in Eagles captain was outstanding in goal as he made several saves including two point-blank saves against Mario Balotelli. He was so confident and composed. But was again forced out of the game due to injury.

6 Solomon Kwambe

He joined the attack well, but caught napping in his recovery. He was the weakest point in the defence. He put in a fair shift and can only get better.

7 Benjamin Francis

He joined the attack well, recovery rate was good. He made a good assist for Nigeria’s second goal.

7 Godfrey Oboabona

He was The Trojan in the defence as he thwarted many attacks of Italians. He marshaled the defence well and enjoyed a personal duel with Balotelli.

6 Azubuike Egwuekwe

He started with fear but soon gained his confidence and thwarted many attacks as his tackle were timely and neat.

7 Ogenyi Onazi

He was busy as always. His marking was great. He dribbled well and gave some good long balls. He did a lot of dirty job in the middle of the park.

6 John Mikel Obi

He tried to control the midfield, but was sometimes too slow and clumsy. But again he delivered some of his telling long balls to spark of the Eagles charge for goals.

5 Nnamdi Oduamadi

He was not at his best in the game. He made work much for the other midfielders to do. You begin to wonder he is really up to it in the Eagles as he has yet to post a decent game since the big win against Tahiti at the Confederations Cup in Brazil in June.

8 Victor Moses

He was lively, used his pace and skills to trouble the Italy defence. He was denied a couple of goals by the Italy defence.

7 Bright Dike

The big striker has shown he has the quality to challenge for a first-team shirt in the Eagles with yet another superbly taken goal for Nigeria. He was full of running and was always a threat whenever he went forward.

8 Shola Ameobi

The Newcastle United man posted his finest outing for Nigeria yet. Apart from his goal, his calmness and good ball distribution was a threat to Italians. He attacked with great precision. He created the first goal and deservedly scored a fantastic second goal.

6 John Ogu

The 45th minute substitute complimented Onazi and Mikel in midfield. He has good marking ability and his ability to hold on to ball frustrated the Italians. He was denied a goal by the Italy goalkeeper.

5 Ahmed Musa

He brought life into the attack with his pace and crosses but his decisions were late at times. He could even have got on the score board.

4 Emmanuel Emenike

His physical presence was noticed but he seemed heavy and a little disinterested when he was brought in for his 20th Eagles cap.

3 Brown Ideye

He had no effort at goal after coming in as a 77th minute substitute. Again questions will be asked if his is really of international class.

7 Vincent Enyeama

He came on in the 65th minute for the injured Ejide and made several saves to ensure that the African champions came away with a heart-warming draw.

Super Eagles held to a thrilling draw by Italy

Giuseppe Rossi and Emanuele Giaccherini were on target as Italy scrambled a 2-2 draw with Nigeria in an entertaining friendly.

This was a World Cup warm-up for both sides at Craven Cottage, as the Super Eagles booked their ticket on Saturday by beating Ethiopia in the play-offs. Rossi recovered from tonsillitis to partner Mario Balotelli, the first choice strike pairing for the World Cup, while the revamped side included PSG goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu and Angelo Ogbonna, whose parents emigrated to Italy from Nigeria. Cesare Prandelli celebrated his 50th match in charge of the Azzurri, the fourth consecutive draw.

An early Victor Moses free kick curled wide, but the forwards combined brilliantly for the opening goal. Balotelli held up the ball and threaded it through for Rossi to chip the on-rushing goalkeeper. The Fiorentina hitman put his mark on the game and showed bravery in the one-on-one despite two years out with injury. It was his first Azzurri goal since facing Estonia in June 2011.

Godfrey Oboabona’s tackle on Balotelli was clean, yet hard, then Sirigu had his palms stung by Lazio midfielder Eddy Onazi’s screamer. Brescia’s Nnamdi Oduamadi threw himself at a Balotelli curler to turn it wide from the edge of the box.

Prandelli had said he wanted Italy to move the ball around quicker and they certainly started with that message, as Riccardo Montolivo prodded wide after a rapid give-and-go with Sunderland’s Emanuele Giaccherini.

Montolivo surged forward through the middle and spread to the right for Balotelli, whose angled drive forced a great one-handed save from Austin Ejide.

Germany had scored with a header on Friday and Nigeria did the same, as Bright Dike rose above Manuel Pasqual – possibly with a shove in the back – to nod in Shola Ameobi’s cross from the left.

Moments later, Moses was given space to run forward, but his shot was deflected wide off Andrea Ranocchia.

It was only a warning, as Ameobi got between centre-backs for a splendid volley at the near post to turn the game around completely. As with against Germany, Italy seemed to let their heads and the tempo drop considerably after conceding.

Balotelli performed a remarkable flick on the turn between three players and his volley caused real problems for Ejide.

Straight after the restart Francis Benjamin flew in with a crucial sliding tackle on Balotelli in the six-yard box and from the resulting corner Super Mario tested Ejide again.

Italy got back on level terms with a well-worked move, as Balotelli and Rossi combined before Antonio Candreva rolled across for Giaccherini in acres of space to blast in with the inside of his right foot. It was his third Azzurri strike.

A free kick flashed across the face of goal and John Ogu’s header was just wide from a corner. Prandelli made a treble substitution, giving Parma midfielder Marco Parolo only his second cap, the other being in March 2011.

Parolo could’ve scored within five minutes of coming on, but incredibly turned the follow-up over an open goal from six yards after Ejide acrobatically parried an Andrea Pirlo free kick. Moments later, his low drive cracked the base of the upright with a slight deflection.

Egwueke flew to intercept a cross that Balotelli was shaping up to volley in. Goalkeeper Ejide suffered a knee injury during that move and had to make way for first choice Vincent Enyeama.

Alessio Cerci flashed a shot across the face of goal – a little too powerful to act as an assist for Balotelli – while the Milan striker curled just past the far top corner on an Alessandro Diamanti cross-field assist.

Ogu was about to score with a fierce strike from 25 metres, but Sirigu flew to punch it out of the top corner. Moments later the PSG goalkeeper got down quickly to push an Ahmed Musa effort off the line and Emmanuel Emenike hit the side-netting.

Balotelli had a fantastic chance to score, but seemed surprised the Cristian Maggio ball had come through and hit a fresh-air shot from four yards. Parolo’s attempt was deflected over from close range, but Diamanti went even closer with a trademark free kick that thumped the crossbar with Enyeama rooted to the spot.

Enyeama palmed away another attempt from Parolo and a couple of Diamanti snapshots, as Italy kept pushing to the final whistle. Deep into stoppages, Cerci's pass flashed across the face of goal with Balotelli just unable to tap in.

The day Roberto Baggio ended the golden era

With Italy and Nigeria set to clash in London, Giancarlo Rinaldi shares memories of that epic encounter in the USA.

My father had put his jacket on to leave. He was at the door, ready to turn his back on a calamitous end to Italy's World Cup. But then Roberto Baggio intervened.

Even now the goal has an improbable look. Find it again on YouTube and it tracks a path which could make a believer of the most ardent agnostic. The shot finds the narrowest of gaps on its journey to the net. It threads its way between a defender's heel and an attacker's foot, past a goalkeeper's glove and sneaks inside the post. It's a strike which increases your incredulity every time you watch it.

Italy, as improbable as it seemed, were back on level terms with Nigeria. And my father had to take his jacket back off.

Even by the standards of delicious torment Arrigo Sacchi's side distributed during the 1994 World Cup, this game was a high point. They had stumbled their way out of a group containing Norway, Mexico and the Republic of Ireland with a win, a draw and a loss. Their goal tally was a meagre two strikes. But it was enough to get them the final spot in the last 16 as a best third-place finisher. The traditional Italian low-key way to progress in a tournament had been achieved once more.

Nigeria, for their part, had emerged as group winners in a section containing Bulgaria, Argentina and Greece. Daniel Amokachi on his own had matched the Azzurri's goalscoring exploits. Plenty of pundits were predicting a World Cup upset for the then three-time World Cup winners when they faced the Super Eagles.

The card-happy Mexican referee Arturo Brizio Carter made his mark early, booking present-day Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo after just two minutes. That was the first of 10 cards he would wave during the game. Minutes later Daniele Massaro was next into the referee's notebook.

That was symptomatic of a tetchy and tense opening period before Nigeria broke the deadlock. A moment of defensive slackness from an unexpected source cost Italy dearly.

"I was marking someone - I forget who it was - who was very good at heading the ball," recalled Paolo Maldini. "I was watching him more than the ball."

"Maldini could not get it away and it bounced over my head and ended up right at an opponent's feet," added defensive colleague Roberto Mussi. Emmanuel Amuneke needed no second invitation to give the lead to Clemens Westerhof's men. The "shock" elimination was on.

And it only seemed to get more likely as the game progressed. In climatic conditions Maldini described as "ridiculous," Italy failed to scale any great heights. When the half-time whistle blew, the body language of players like Beppe Signori suggested they had little faith in turning things around. Years later, Sacchi insisted he still had confidence during his team talk.

"I was quite tough and told them it was a game we could not lose," he said. "I did not think Nigeria were as good as people said."

He made his first change during the interval with Dino Baggio replacing Nicola Berti in midfield and it almost paid off at once. The man on his way to Parma from Juventus came as close as anyone to levelling matters. But after that chance went begging, things fell flat again. So, on 63 minutes, the ex-Milan boss made a move which would have an even more profound effect. Off came Signori and on went birthday boy Gianfranco Zola. It was the first action he had seen in the whole tournament and he would last about 12 minutes.

"I tried to get the ball back and I got it without touching the defender," he remembered. "He threw himself down and made a real meal of it. I thought it was odd when the referee whistled for a free kick - then I saw him moving his hand to get a card and I couldn't believe I was going to get booked. But he sent me off instead. When I saw the red card it took me a while to realise he had actually sent me off."

Zola fell to his knees in disbelief. "The world caved in around him," said Mussi. "He was crying in the dressing room." Millions of Italy fans around the world felt the same. There had been little prospect of recovery with 11 men, what hope was there with just 10? Metaphorically at least, most of us had our jackets on ready to head home like my father.

"Something happened to me during that game which never happened before or since," admitted Sacchi. "I could see us going up the steps of the plane and heading back home to Italy." One can only imagine what kind of reception the Azzurri in general - and Zola in particular - might have received. Tomato sellers might have been anticipating a busy day.

But, with two minutes to play, the reporters would have to rewrite their sporting obituaries on Italy's World Cup dream. Baggio suddenly seized his role as the man of destiny for the tournament and delivered his pinpoint strike. The release of joy among the European side was as intense as the sense of deflation in their African opposition.

Sunday Oliseh, who would go on to play with Juventus, reckoned they showed their inexperience. Instead of making their opponents chase the ball when they were a man short, Nigeria indulged in a few unnecessary tricks and flicks. He has never been able to watch the game again, such was the pain it caused.

Baggio's redemption was complete in the first period of extra time. He chipped a through ball to Antonio Benarrivo who tumbled inside the box. The Divine Ponytail's spot-kick kissed the post on its way into the net and Italy had the lead. By hook or by crook - and with one famous Dino Baggio clearance - they held on to victory.

"It was as if a train had just passed over the top of us and we found out we were still alive,” said Sacchi. There was certainly something of the miraculous as the Azzurri progressed all the way.

Management of Akwa United have announced that 21 players who played for the Uyo-based team last season, will remain in the squad for the upcoming campaign.

Goals galore for Nigerians as season climax in Norway

John Chibuike and Leke James were on target for Rosenborg and Aalesund respectively on Sunday.

It was last round of matches at the Scandinavian region.

Chibuike's Rosenborg still had chances for the title ahead of the game, as they were just one point behind Stromsgodset, but Stromsgodset won their last game 4-0 and they are 2013 champions.

However Rosenborg players didn't know that during the match and they smashed Lillestrom 3-0 in an away game.

John Chibuike was able to score a brace, as he opened the score in the 7th minute and than settled the score in 72nd minute.

Lillestrom's Nigerian striker Freddy Friday made an appearance in the second half.

Rosenborg finished the season on 2nd place and next year they will play in UEFA Europa League qualifications.

Leke James also was on target, as his Aalesund ended season with a 2-1 away victory over Sogndal.

The Kaduna-born Nigerian striker scored in the 71st minute.

Aalesund finished the season on 4th place, just 2 points behind third placed Ugonna Anyora's Haugesund.

John Chibuike scored 9 goals this season in Norway, while Leke James bagged 10.

Ideye maintains good form, Haruna also stake claim

Brown Ideye scored a goal and had an assist, as side, Dynamo Kiev smashed Volyn Lutsk on Sunday in Ukrainian Premier League.

Former Monaco midfielder Lukman Haruna was in the thick of the action.

They Nigerians both played for full 90 minutes and were useful to the team.

Volyn and Super Eagles winger, Michael Babatunde was absent due to injury.

Dynamo are on 5th place in table with 30 points after 16 games, with Volyn on 12th place with 16 points.

Karabukspor too strong for Rizespor

Karabukspor parading Joseph Akpala defeated Rizespor 2-1.

Former Bendel Insurance, Werder Bremen and Club Brugges forward Joseph Akpala lasted the length for the hosts.

In action for the away side were Godfrey Oboabona and Uche Kalu. The lasted 90 and 62 minutes respectively.

Taye Taiwo scores but on the loosing side

Taye Taiwo had less luck in the match against Sivasspor. Bursaspor lost the match 1-2 and Taiwo scored the only goal for his team in the 77th minute.

It was Taiwo's first goal in the league but second in total, as he previously scored in the UEFA Europa League.

Super-sub Eneramo seals Besiktas win

Former Esperance Sportive Tunis attacker, Michael Eneramo scored a goal for Besiktas over the weekend.

Besiktas had no problems with Kayserispor and won the match 3-0.

Eneramo replaced Hugo Almeida in the 73rd minute, and scored his first league goal for Besiktas, and third in the match in the 90th minute.

Nigerian wins Latvian Premier League

FK Ventspils who have Nigerian striker Ahmed Abdultaofik in their ranks have emerged as Latvian Virsliga winners.

Ventspils finished on top of the log with 67 points, five points above second Skonto and fifteen above third Daugava Daugavpils. This is the fifth title in club's 16-year history.

The 21-year-old Abdultaofik was not a regular fixture for the league Kings but he netted four goals in 20 matches in all competitions.

Two other Nigerians were in action for some other clubs in the league.

Centre back, Daniel Ola and striking machine, Ibrahim Babatunde ended the season in third place with Daugava Daugavpils.

Former Flying Eagles skipper picks up win with Almeria

Almeria with Nigerian footballer Ramon Azeez picked up their third league victory, winning 1-0 away to Osasuna at El Sadar.

After starting the season, Almeria did not win in the first 10 rounds. It shows, how important for them are last victories.

Both teams started the match aggressively, but Almeria seemed to be holding back, waiting for Osasuna to overstretch and make a mistake.

The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. Rodrigo Rios got a lot of help from Osasuna goalkeeper Andres Fernandez who fumbled a corner kick inside the six-yard box for the striker to toe across the goal line.

The hosts had their chance to draw in first half injury time, but Esteban Suarez saved teammate Hernan Pellarano from scoring an own goal.

After the break, Osasuna looked more dangerous, who were well on top but they could not find a way past an inspired Esteban.

Oriol Riera should have scored, but his header was straight at Esteban who parried over the bar. For the final minutes of the game,

Osasuna tried hard to get back into the match, but in the end, the points went to Almeria.

FA Cup decided in Kazakhstan

FC Shakhter Karagandy made up for the disappointment of failing to defend their league crown as they claimed a first ever Kazakh Cup by defeating FC Taraz in Astana.

Sergei Khizhnichenko struck the only goal of the game shortly before the break, turning in Aleksandar Simčević's low cross to make it an even more memorable year for UEFA Europa League hopefuls Shakhter, who this season became the first club from Kazakhstan to compete in a UEFA competition group stage.

After the final whistle, the players received their medals from UEFA President Michel Platini, while Nursultan Nazarbayev, the president of Kazakhstan and a Shakhter fan, handed the trophy over to the victors.

"It's a great honour to receive the cup from the president and definitely the highlight of the night," said Shakhter captain Andrei Finonchenko. "The main thing is that we won and thus filled the gap in the history of our club. It's even more pleasant to win in the centenary year of football in Kazakhstan. I want to thank all our fans who made it to the stadium or supported us near their TV sets."

Moments In European Football

A hat-trick from Zlatan Ibrahimović helped Paris Saint-Germain extend their lead at the top of Ligue 1 to four points, as LOSC Lille and AS Monaco FC both failed to pick up wins. "It was a good night," commented the Sweden forward following his side's 3-1 success against OGC Nice. "For the moment, everything is going very well. We are playing well and staying focused." Second-placed LOSC could only grind out a goalless stalemate with EA Guingamp, while Monaco came from behind to earn a 1-1 home draw with Évian Thonon Gaillard FC. FC Nantes won again, 3-0 at FC Girondins de Bordeaux, to remain fourth, while Olympique de Marseille edged FC Sochaux-Montbéliard 2-1.

Elsewhere, a quartet of league titles were decided across Europe, with FC BATE Borisov securing an eighth successive league honour in Belarus while VMFD Žalgiris were crowned for the first time in 14 years in Lithuania, despite a final-day loss. FK Ventspils defeated FK Daugava Riga 1-0 to reclaim the Latvian league and Strømsgodset IF overcame FK Haugesund 4-0 to seal the Norwegian championship. Meanwhile, FC Zenit's advantage in Russia was cut to three points as the pacesetters fell 4-2 at FC Spartak Moskva, and the lead changed hands once again in the Netherlands, with Vitesse defeating FC Utrecht 3-1 to displace AZ Alkmaar.

League Round Up- Germany

"It's a very, very good weekend for us," said Bayern's Philipp Lahm after his side set a new Bundesliga record of 37 games without defeat by downing FC Augsburg 3-0. The triumph also lifted them four points clear of Borussia Dortmund, who succumbed 2-1 at VfL Wolfsburg. "We made too many errors and we were punished for them," explained BVB midfielder Nuri Şahin. Jürgen Klopp's men have been joined on 28 points by Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who won an eight-goal thriller 5-3 against Hamburger SV with Son Heung-Min striking a hat-trick, while fourth-placed VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach earned a 3-1 success against 1. FC Nürnberg.

Ameobi's team-mates happy with form

Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul produced what he said was the performance of his career as his team survived a second-half onslaught from Tottenham Hotspur to win 1-0 at White Hart Lane in the Premier League on Sunday.

The 25-year old Dutch international was mobbed by his team mates at the end after thwarting Spurs time and again to help his side to a second successive win after beating Chelsea 2-0 last week.

"These kind of games do not happen very often and three points away at Tottenham is a fantastic result," said Krul on Sky Sports.

The keeper used body, arms and legs in a stellar display that produced 14 saves, the most in a Premier League match this season.

Asked what his best save was, he picked out one from Roberto Soldado, when he acrobatically tipped a header over the bar.

"With the sun so low it was difficult to see it and it just kick-started from there," he said.
"I don't think I have ever played as well. This is the highlight of my career. It was nice to celebrate with the back four at the end."

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew told reporters: "That was one of the best goalkeeping displays I have ever seen. Wow! I think he is the best Dutch goalkeeper and I think he proved that today."

Newcastle won with a goal after 13 minutes when French international striker Loic Remy rounded 42-year-old Spurs stand-in keeper Brad Friedel and fired the ball into the net.

Pellegrini deflated by Sunderland loss

City manager Manuel Pellegrini was left deflated after he watched his side succumb to a 1-0 Premier League defeat against lowly Sunderland in another toothless away display on Sunday.

Phil Bardsley's well-taken goal midway through the first half proved decisive as City crashed to their fourth successive 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light, spurning the opportunity to climb to third in the table.

"I really can't believe we've lost this match. I think Sunderland won the match with just one shot on our goal in 90 minutes," Pellegrini told Sky Sports.

Bendtner 'incredibly disappointed' to stay at Arsenal

Niklas Bendtner has criticised Arsenal and manager Arsene Wenger for not selling him in the summer and said it will be a "miracle" if he stays at the Premier League club.

In an interview with the Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende the 25-year-old said he was "incredibly disappointed" when Wenger called to say he was staying in north London.

"I was ready to move on and I don't think they wanted to keep me," he said. He said he was now training hard as he prepares for the next transfer window in January. "I train a lot more seriously today than I ever did at Arsenal, "

Bendtner said. "I am going to build myself up so that I will be this powerful machine, the perfect item for sale.

King Messi injured but Barcelona cruise to win at Betis

Barcelona lost Lionel Messi to another leg injury but still had more than enough firepower to win 4-1 at struggling Real Betis and capitalize on a stumble by title rival Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Things looked grim for the defending champions when Messi suffered his third leg injury of the season and asked to be substituted in the 21st minute, as Barcelona came under pressure. But Cesc Fabregas stepped in by scoring two goals and making another in a convincing victory before he was replaced late in the match due to pain in his right knee.

"We started without any intensity and they were rolling over us for the first 20-25 minutes," Fabregas said. "But then we had a good 20 minutes before dominating in the second half."

Fabregas, who has started nine of Barca's 13 league matches and appeared particularly put out at not being chosen to start Wednesday's Champions League win over AC Milan, made it clear he wants to prove his worth to coach Gerard Martino.

"I know the starting 11 that my coach has in his head and that I am not in it," Fabregas said. "I will work as much as I can to erase any doubts."

Barcelona said Messi and Fabregas would undergo tests on Monday to determine the extent of their injuries. Goalkeeper Victor Valdes made two superb saves to deny Jorge Molina before Fabregas set up Neymar for Barcelona's 35th-minute opener.

Pedro Rodriguez made it 2-0 two minutes later with a solo effort that left Betis' defense in tatters, and Fabregas finished off the scoring for Barcelona in the 63rd and the 79th.

Barcelona's 12th win in 13 rounds kept it undefeated and lifted it three points clear of second-place Atletico after it was held to a 1-1 draw at Villarreal earlier.

Messi, who appeared to be back to his old self after scoring a double on Wednesday against AC Milan in the Champions League, hurt a muscle in his left thigh while sprinting and was replaced by Andres Iniesta.

"No doubt we will have to talk to Leo so that this third injury doesn't worry him and affect him mentally," Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said.

Last-place Betis had already tested Valdes by the time Messi went off, but the Spain goalie continued his excellent season by denying Molina one-one-one, and moments later leaping to turn away the striker's header at the far post.

Having regrouped after losing Messi, Alex Song met Fabregas' run with a weighted pass that left him free to cross for the unmarked Neymar, who scored his fourth league goal of the season.

Pedro then raced onto a high ball in midfield, knocked it beyond Betis' last line of defense, and collected it before looping a shot beyond goalkeeper Guillermo Sara.

Betis' Joan Verdu went close and Jose "Nono" Delgado hit the woodwork as the hosts tried to react after halftime. But coach Pepe Mel's insistence on pushing his defensive line up the pitch proved fatal.

Neymar had threatened twice on the break before Iniesta lobbed the ball wide to Martin Montoya, who had three Barcelona players to cross to in the area against one Betis defender.

Montoya chose Fabregas to tap in his first goal before the former Arsenal midfielder nodded Dani Alves' pass off the turf and the upright before it trickled over the goalline. Three minutes later, Fabregas left the match.

"We tried to make long passes behind their defense to look for the open spaces they were leaving, and I think we took full advantage of them," said Pedro.

Molina finally beat Valdes from the penalty spot for Betis' consolation goal in stoppage time after Dani Alves fouled Javier Matilla in the box.

Robin Van Persie shakes-off thing strain to nail Arsenal

Robin van Persie tormented former club Arsenal once again by scoring the only goal in Manchester United's 1-0 victory over the Premier League leaders on Sunday, lifting the resurgent champions to fifth place in the standings.

The Netherlands striker met Wayne Rooney's corner with a header into the top corner in the 27th minute to condemn Arsenal to its second loss of the campaign and reduce its lead to two points from Liverpool. Since leaving north London for Manchester in August last year, Van Persie has scored in all three games against Arsenal.

After a scratchy start to the season, United is coming good under new manager David Moyes and is now just five points behind Arsenal, which didn't create a clear-cut chance in a flat display at Old Trafford.

After picking up just one point in matches against chief rivals Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, it was time for United to deliver and for Moyes to claim a first signature victory in his short, erratic time as Alex Ferguson's successor. A defeat would have left them 11 points behind Arsenal and their hopes of retaining the title seriously dented.

As it was, United produced a performance of authority and tenacity. And who else was going to settle the match than Van Persie? Still unable to forgive the striker for leaving for United last year for 24 million pounds (then $38 million), Arsenal's away contingent weren't shy in expressing their feelings toward the Dutchman early in the game with crude chants.

Van Persie responded the only way he could - by scoring, just as he did in both meetings between the teams last season on his way to becoming the league's top scorer for the second season running. By getting away from Olivier Giroud and looping a header into the top corner over Kieran Gibbs, Van Persie netted for a fourth straight match in the league and a seventh time this campaign.

That was one of the few sights of goal in a cagey first half in which Arsenal played well within itself, displaying an inferiority complex many thought had disappeared after its strong start to the season. United, with Rooney to the fore, hounded the visitors into sloppy errors and kept playmaker Mesut Ozil on the periphery. Arsenal's only half-chance fell to Giroud, and he headed over from the edge of the area from Aaron Ramsey's cross.

The Londoners were given a lift at halftime, however, with United center back Nemanja Vidic not coming out for the second half after being clattered in the head by the hip of his goalkeeper, David de Gea, in the final seconds of the first half.

Phil Jones, who had been shielding the defense brilliantly in central midfield, dropped into the backline and Arsenal's silky midfielders finally had some space to perform.

United initially remained in the ascendancy, with Rooney dragging a left-foot shot just wide from the edge of the area on the hour mark.
But Arsenal slowly began to take command, probing around United's area. Two devilish crosses by Bacary Sagna were missed by Giroud then Nicklas Bendtner, Jones denied Giroud with a last-ditch tackle and the France striker slid a shot just wide of the post.

In another EPL match, Stoke moved out of the Premier League relegation zone on Sunday after squandering a 2-0 lead over Swansea before drawing 3-3 with a penalty in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Jonathan Waters slotted home Stoke's opener after eight minutes and Stephen Ireland steered home a second midway through the half, with Peter Crouch providing both assists.

Wilfried Bony brought Swansea back into the game when the Ivorian headed home Jonathan de Guzman's cross in the 56th minute and Nathan Dyer leveled in the 74th after a cutback by Wayne Routledge.

Roma feels the heat of the summit

Roma waere held to a 1-1 draw at home by lowly Sassuolo after conceding a last-minute equalizer, while AC Milan's struggle continued with a 0-0 draw at bottom club Chievo Verona in Serie A on Sunday. Sassuolo defender Alessandro Longhi's own goal looked to have secured victory for Roma. But 19-year-old Domenico Berardi, who scored a hat trick last week, leveled with the last kick of the game.

Poyet's magic works again

Phil Bardsley scored in the 21st minute and struggling Sunderland neutralised Manchester City's high-powered attack to hang on for a surprising 1-0 victory in the Premier League on Sunday.

Bardsley scored his second goal in five days as the full back beat Costel Pantilimon with a curling shot from a tight angle, and Sunderland soaked up City's pressure the rest of the way to earn just their second victory of the season.

It signaled a possible revival under new manager Gus Poyet, who took over after Paolo Di Canio was sacked with the team in last place. However, it is still second from bottom with seven points from 11 games.

Newcastle win at Tottenham

France forward Loic Remy scored his seventh goal in his last seven Premier League games to earn resurgent Newcastle a 1-0 win at Tottenham and a second straight victory over a top-four contender.

But the visitors needed a string of stunning saves by goalkeeper Tim Krul, especially a one-handed stop from Gylfi Sigurdsson's deflected free kick, in the second half to secure the win at White Hart Lane.

Six days after clinching Newcastle's 2-0 win over Chelsea, Remy ran onto Yoan Gouffran's through-ball, rounded goalkeeper Brad Friedel and slotted home for the 13th-minute winner.

Emmanuel 'pleased' after a wonderful week

Emmanuel Folorunsho was ‘pleased’ with his TEAP side after another wonderful week of training at the club.

The NNL outfit won a practice match earlier in the week thanks to the sharp reflexes of the 15-year-old custodian.

"I am pleased that the coaches are happy,” he told teapfcabuja.blogspot.com. “We have to enjoy playing and always maintain the winning mentality, but we can’t stop working.

"I love my job, and I respect this club. The fans here show their feelings, and that encourages us to do well.

"I think we are playing well and always look dangerous going forward,” the former Tiwa Warriors custodian of Ondo said.

In the new week, the RCCG outfit side under the guidance of Malomo-Paris will be out to play three tough friendlies, with Abuja Football College and a rematch with Super Warriors on the timetable. But Emmanuel, has shrugged off the threats of the teams.

"As shown in previous matches, we are always in control, dominating the rival," he told teapfcabuja.blogspot.com.

"We won't let our guard down and always play to the gaffer's instruction.

The goalkeeper then commented on TEAP's chances in the 2013/14 Nigeria National League season due to kickoff by 7th December, 2013.

"TEAP have to show more zeal in the competition and we need to do that right from Day One. Of course we need to be humble but believe that we make a statement."

Eaglets becomes the most successful Cadet team

Nigeria became the most successful team in FIFA U-17 World Cup history with a 3-0 win over holders Mexico at the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The final was a rematch of the 6-1 win Nigeria inflicted on the Mexicans in Group F play and sees the Golden Eaglets lay hands on the junior world trophy for the fourth time in their history, one better than South American giants Brazil. When the final whistle went in the UAE capital, fans and players alike rejoiced, fingers pointed to the sky, with what has become the traditional Nigerian celebration of: “yes, yes yes!”

Mexico kept the ball for a full two minutes at the start of the game, moving it around well and making the Nigerians chase. El Tri even managed the first chance on goal after six minutes. Osvaldo Rodriguez crossed from the left, but Alejandro Diaz couldn’t keep his close-range effort the right side of the post. Two minutes on and Ivan Ochoa – who scored twice in the semi-final win over Argentina – saw his off-balance header pushed over the bar by Dele Alampasu.

The corner came to nothing for the Mexicans, but Nigeria benefitted greatly by bursting out on a classic counter-attack. Kelechi Iheanacho went flying up the pitch. With just one Mexican defender in position, the No10 Golden Eaglet laid the ball in for Taiwo Awoniyi who then fed it on to Musa Yahaha, who had a little help from Erick Aguirre. The Mexican midfielder mistakenly hit the ball into his own net in an attempt to recover.

With the score 1-0, Musa Muhammed was giving the Mexicans fits with his rampaging runs up the right side. He pinned the opponents back at every opportunity. As the first half pushed toward the interval, the Africans upped their tempo in search of a second goal. Yahaya rattled the crossbar with a stunning effort from 20 yards out after 38 minutes. Pressure was mounting and the fans in the stands were on their feet when Awoniyi’s bicycle-kick from the penalty spot forced Raul Gudino into a magnificent reaction save in the dying moments of the half.

The second period began with a frenzy of attacks at both ends of the pitch, but it was Nigeria who made theirs count, making it 2-0 in the 56th minute. Captain Muhammed unleashed a wicked swirling shot that Mexican keeper Gudino simply couldn’t hang on to. He spilled a rebound directly to the feet of the most dangerous man on the pitch, and Iheanacho made no mistake dispatching his sixth goal of the tournament.

With a quarter-hour to go, Mexico managed to carve out a rare second-half chance, but Ochoa’s header from close-range slipped wide of the post as the holders began to wilt under the ceaseless pressure of the buzzing Nigerians. Muhammed added a third with ten minutes to go, curling a sublime free-kick into the top corner.

Anyone in UAE who had the pleasure to see them will tell you that this Nigerian team were the best on offer. Even a few of the Mexican fans were mumbling “yes, yes, yes” when the final whistle went on Nigeria’s glorious campaign here in UAE.

Revealed! Sacked Sierra Leonian U20 women gaffer administered drugs on players

The Sierra Leone Football Association Executive Committee after thoroughly assessing a technical report submitted by the former Coach of the National U-20 football team Anna Williams, has discovered that besides her failure to provide technical leadership in the away leg of the National U-20 Championship against the Nigerian U-20 on Saturday 26th October where the team lost 10 – 0, Coach Williams administered certain medication to the entire squad which rendered them ineffective to match their Nigerian counterparts.

The drug TONKAT ALI is primarily used to increase the flow of blood to and from the heart and also to excite the user sexually. The purpose of administering the drug to the players was to enhance their performance against the Super Falconets of Nigeria.

Coach Williams in her admission administered the drug to almost every player on the team without the knowledge of the accompanying team Doctor and the other members of the delegation.

The FA considers her action to be a gross manifestation of misconduct, thus putting the lives of the players at risk and jeopardizing the integrity and trust of the nation.

From the technical reports submitted by other members of the delegation to Nigeria, the girls appeared unfocused, unusual and jaded as result of unusual menstruation and diarrhoea due to the side effects of the drug.

As a result, the Executive Committee would like to further assure the general public and stakeholders that a thorough investigation into events surrounding the first leg outing in Nigeria will be instituted, and the necessary punitive actions will be taken.

Former Juventus and Nigerian international hails the standard of UAE 2013

A true legend of the African game, Sunday Oliseh’s credentials are plain to see. The Nigerian took part in two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998) and won the gold medal at the 1996 Men’s Olympic Football Tournament with the Super Eagles. Over the course of his career the midfielder played for several of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Ajax.

At the FIFA U-17 World Cup United Arab Emirates 2013, Oliseh is using his expertise and experience in a different capacity. As a member of FIFA’s Technical Study Group (TSG), the 39-year-old has been tasked with analysing the tournament’s events. He has been impressed with what he has seen so far.

“The level is high,” Oliseh told FIFA.com. “What’s particularly stood out for me is the way that most sides really play as a team. Every player is disciplined in their position. That’s unusual in this age category and is a positive development.”

The boys are extremely motivated but above all they’re very disciplined, which is very refreshing to see.

The former Nigeria captain has of course been paying close attention to the progress of his young compatriots, who have stormed into the semi-finals with some swashbuckling performances. “I’ve been very impressed with Nigeria,” Oliseh said. “The boys are extremely motivated but above all they’re very disciplined, which is very refreshing to see. They have a lot of good individual players.

"The way the side switches from defence to attack is very good, frequently with one-touch passes. That’s difficult to do as it requires a lot of movement, foresight and for all the players to support each other.”

For many observers the Golden Eaglets, the tournament’s top scorers with 20 goals so far, are the favourites to take the title. Their semi-final opponents are Sweden, who held Nigeria to a 3-3 draw in an entertaining group stage match. Yet that isn't the only reason Oliseh is urging his countrymen to be wary.

“For me the biggest challengers are Sweden. They’re unbelievably strong tactically. I’ve watched two of their matches and each time they played quite differently. For instance, against Japan they sat back and allowed their opponent to have the ball. They were well-organised, looked for the gaps and were clinical in scoring their two goals.

“Against Honduras on the other hand, they controlled the game themselves, looked to keep possession and built attacks from the back,” Oliseh continued. “That impressed me a lot. On top of that they have talented individuals like Elias Andersson, Valmir Berisha and Gustav Engvall. It’s a very modern Swedish team. The boys are enjoying the tournament and you can tell they love playing football. That’s an important factor.”

While the Scandinavians have raised more than a few eyebrows with their progress to the last four in their maiden tournament appearance, another team has surprised Oliseh even more.

“For me it was Uzbekistan, even though they lost to Honduras in the Round of 16. They impressed me a lot in the group stage, as they were superbly organised and made life really tough for their opponents with their tactically astute style of play and their physical strength. All of the players knew what their role was, they pressed well as a team and doubled-up on their opponents. You had the feeling they’d done their homework. In the last 16 they lost one of their most important players and made several changes in order to compensate for his absence. That was their undoing in the end.”

Despite his clear and incisive analysis, Oliseh refused to be pinned down on who he thought would lift the trophy. “Of course it’d be fantastic if Nigeria become world champions,” he said. “They certainly have the quality to do so, but in football you never know what might happen. For example, I’d never have thought that Uzbekistan would get knocked out by Honduras...”

Ligue 1: Vincent Enyeama unbeatable in goal as Lille replace Monaco in second

Monaco's unbeaten league run ended on Sunday night as Lille won out 2-0 at the Grand Stade, with Vincent Enyeama unbeatable in goal as Les Dogues replaced their opponents in second.

It was far from easy for Lille, especially with Monaco attacking all-out in the final stages, but Nigeria 'keeper Vincent Enyeama's incredible double save to deny Radamel Falcao and then Emmanuel Rivière in injury time (90'+1) was emblematic of the skill and determination that René Girard's men had produced to deny their expensively-assembled opponents.

Monaco showed flashes of their attacking power as João Moutinho drew an early save from Enyeama in the 6th minute.

After standing tall to deny Monaco super-sub Emmnauel Rivière - brought on to play alongside Falcao in an attacking move from Ranieri - one-on-one with Super Eagles goalie, Enyeama equal to the task.

It was only the second time Burnley had conceded the first goal of a game this season but they were 2-0 down 15 minutes later, through an unexpected source - Lions centre-back Shittu netted with a deflected long-range shot that sailed past a wrong-footed Heaton.

The Clarets halved the deficit immediately through Vokes but at the start of the second half the hosts were again the livelier, Waghorn twice going close with shots from long distance.

UAE 2013: Tiki-taka Eaglets book their place in the semi-finals, to face Sweden

Three-time champion Nigeria booked their place in the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in UAE with a 2-0 win over Uruguay in Sharjah. Taiwo Awoniyi – deputising for the injured Success Isaac – scored both goals in a game that was a true test of the Golden Eaglets’ title aspirations. The African favourites will now meet Sweden in the semi-final round, in a replay of their 3-3 Group F draw.

Uruguay had the first chance of note after only six minutes when Enrique Etcheverry crossed low through the penalty area. The impressive Leandro Otormin got a boot to the ball, but could only direct his effort wide of goal. It was a false dawn for the 2011 runners-up, however, as the Golden Eaglets took the game by the scruff of the neck after 18 minutes.

The Nigerians, who scored 18 goals in their four games heading into the quarter-final round, opened the scoring from a fabulous piece of creative interplay. Kelechi Iheanacho, scorer of five goals at these finals, laid a wonderful through ball, perfectly weighted, from deep in midfield that was latched onto by Taiwo Awoniyi. The striker made no mistake, hitting home to the back post for his second goal of the tournament.

Stunned into action, the South Americans had a decent spell shortly after. Kevin Mendez and Otormin both tested Dele Alampasu from distance with powerful efforts. But it was Nigeria who controlled most of the possession and created the more dangerous chances. Captain Musa Muhammed’s cross from the right after 34 minutes was only just missed on the doorstep by the tall and rangy Awoniyi.

The second half started with a flurry of chances for Nigeria, Awoniyi and Musa Yahaya both going close to scoring after creating space for themselves at the edge of the penalty area. Uruguay were hanging on, absorbing wave after wave of Nigerian attacks. In the 68th minute, Iheanacho turned and fired from the edge of the box only for his shot to come flying off the back of a brave Uruguayan defender.

The knockout blow finally came in the 79th minute, and it followed the same pattern as the first Nigerian goal. Iheanacho picked up a perfect pass at the edge of the area from Chidiebere Nwakali and carried the ball toward goal with an elegant touch. The Uruguayan defence collapsed on the No10, but he had the presence of mind to pull the ball across the face of goal, where Awoniyi stabbed home inside the far post to send the fans into hysterics.

Manu Garba’s Nigeria now move on to their seventh U-17 World Cup semi-final, where they will face another thorough examination in the form of the organised and talented Swedes in Dubai.

Karlsson won Swedish top division Allsvenskan back in 2011, he has also managed teams in Norway.

Trelleborg are currently third in Swedish First Division Södra (South), and have slim chances to secure a place in promotion play-offs to Superettan, as with only two rounds left, they have four points less than second-placed Oddevold.

Ofere has been on fire since he joined Trelleborg in July and scored 8 goals in 11 matches so far.

However he may not meet the new coach, as his contract with the Swedish club expires at the end of November.

Give me the central role: Emenike cries out

The former Spartak Moscow forward was often utilised as a winger, a position he doesn't relish.

In recent times, the ex-Cape Town striker has played in his preferred position and has scored 3 goals in 2 last matches for Fenerbahce.

We must maintain some momentum says Moyes

Unbeaten in six matches Manchester United are finally starting to build some momentum after a poor start to the season, manager David Moyes said on Friday ahead of Saturday's trip to Fulham.

Three Premier League defeats in their opening nine fixtures have left United in unfamiliar territory down in eighth place in the table, eight points behind leaders Arsenal. However, with central defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both coming through this week's emphatic League Cup win over Norwich City unscathed after injuries, Moyes was upbeat in his news conference.

"We've started to string together one or two half-decent results and hopefully that will build a bit of momentum," Moyes said. "We've been a bit up and down, winning one then losing one, so we'll hopefully try and get into a bit more consistency."

United scrambled to a 3-2 home victory over Stoke City last weekend, having twice trailed, and will be anxious to pick up three points at Fulham before facing leaders Arsenal at home in their next league fixture.

"It's a gap (at the top) and we have to work to try and close it. We'll take one game at a time and get closer to the top. That's the plan but there's a long way to go," Moyes said.

Robin van Persie was rested against Norwich because of some niggles but is expected to return to face Martin Jol's Fulham at Craven Cottage, although Danny Welbeck is ruled out with fluid on the knee.

The return of Ferdinand and Vidic, who have not started a league game together since the 4-1 defeat at Manchester City in September, has given Moyes plenty of defensive options.

"I think both (Vidic and Ferdinand) are very
close to full fitness," Moyes said. "They showed that in midweek when playing Premier League opposition.

"They both played for 90 minutes so I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be ready to be selected or involved. "Van Persie has been fine. He's trained well and worked quite well this week so hopefully he will be okay."

Like Moyes, Fulham manager Jol has been under scrutiny with his side just two points above the bottom three and knocked out of the League Cup by Championship (second division) Leicester City.

Fulham have won only once at home in the league this season and the attacking partnership of former United player Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Bent is yet to click.

"It is a big game for us and if we can get a good result then the world will look different," Jol said.

Everton have a point to prove says Martinez

Everton can send a message that there is more than one team on Merseyside capable of challenging at the top of the Premier League if they beat Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Across Stanley Park, Liverpool's flying start to the season has caught the eye but Everton's, under new manager Roberto Martinez, has been only marginally less impressive.

Everton are sixth, two points behind second-placed Liverpool and four off leaders Arsenal, and their one league loss was at Manchester City where they took the lead before losing 3-1.

They have coped with the sale of midfielder Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United with ease and in Romelu Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea, they boast one of the most lethal strikers in the top flight.

Martinez, who replaced Old Trafford-bound David Moyes at Goodison Park, has quickly established the eye-catching brand of passing football he ingrained at Wigan Athletic and Swansea City without sacrificing Everton's steely core.

Tottenham are one point better off in fourth spot and Martinez believes the north London club, top-five finishers for the past four seasons, can act as a benchmark for his side.

"If we can win, I'm sure it sends out a message," Spaniard Martinez, who will be without injured striker Arouna Kone, told a news conference on Friday.

"But there's also a message internally; that you gain that confidence and belief in what you are doing." "This Spurs side can become something special but that's why we're looking forward to the challenge - because we feel that we are ready to face whatever we have got in front of us at Goodison," Martinez added.

"I do feel that the environment that is created at Goodison is as positive as you can get as a home team and we want to use that to our advantage."

Despite losing Welsh forward Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, Martinez said the squad Andre Villas-Boas has out together at White Hart Lane is as good as any in England. "Gareth Bale was a phenomenal player for Spurs, there's no two ways about it," he said.

"But when you replace that with seven or eight players, you're going to be in a stronger position because you don't rely on that player.
"As a top-four club, sometimes you are outstanding at something. I think Spurs are developing to be outstanding at everything."

Martinez said Ivory Coast international Kone's knee injury was worse than expected. "We are a little bit worried about the knock that Arouna Kone picked up against Hull City," he said. "We had a bit of a setback. It's a little bit more serious than we first expected, so he won't be available for the squad."
